No sense in staying positive over something in which you have no say and cannot influence in any way, let alone control.
As far as the Stones are concerned, hope for the best, but expect nothing, and demand even less. That way, anything good comes as a pleasant surprise.

Very strange to see this post because I just watched the Concert for George yesterday, and I admit (and this NEVER happens) but I got choked up. Eric Clapton did it so right. There was something totally magic on that stage. The way the people looked and played - the songs - it was that whole backrow of guitarists, Klaus Voorman eventually joining in, the 4 drummers. I thought the vibe was going to dissipate a bit when Paul came on, because I had read where Eric said that Paul had been a bit of a problem. But it's the song "All things must pass" that got to me.

Very touching post Philip. And seeing Dhani Harrison - the spitting image of his wonderful dad - at The Concert For George brings a tear to my eyes everytime.

If anyone is going to break my heart (again)...I prefer it to be done by the Rolling Stones...Quote

No point staying negative about it either. I'm not so sure about the "cannot influence in any way" part though.

A lot of people resist change which is why I think there is sometimes a fair amount of negativity to 'new' things occurring in stonesworld.
Whether they put out a new album (to the chants 'gimme Some Girls deluxe instead!'), or a solo project (Superheavy), or a new suit (pink pinstripe) there is a large group that goes on the attack.
The ironic thing, is part of what almost everyone enjoys about this band is the diversity of music and styles through 50 years.
You can't change people though...they lose something by not being able to appreciate these things, and aren't even aware of that they only limit their world.

Surprising for me to read that you like much of them after Let It Bleed until 1973/GHS. Or is that a wrong conclusion?
I had the impression that your dislike of all post Brian stuff and Mick Taylor was growing every month.
Personally I've tried very hard to get into the 'Wood stuff' since the release of the Live in Texas DVD and Hampton official, but I didn't succeed very well. Now I think I don't like rock music, since almost everybody says they rock so hard on those releases. Or maybe too much treble for my ears.
In my perception the Stones are no typical rock & roll band until let's say 1978.

You left out one very important factor with your first sentence. It's one thing to change, to do different things, etc, but the important part of that aspect is if it's good. That determines whether it's good change or bad change, which obviously reflects the liking of it.

That's true, but if you don't try to do things differently for fear of failure, you never progress. Let the chips fall where they may...have confidence in yourself to succeed and suck it up if you fall flat.

Thanks Amsterdamned. I came back because HM surprised me so much that I felt the need to ask him a question. But surprisingly he doesn't appreciate that. Well, it's okay.

Well, fortunately, compared to the anytime before youtube ha ha, as well as various other media places, one is able to listen to tracks etc before one buys something. Somehow I never bought Mick's Goddess album. I think I was over it, the whole solo trip. I eventually got a copy of it someone gave me, without me even asking for it. It's not awful by any means.
Mick doing whatever is that and no one is making anyone buy something. It sucks it sucks, it's great it's great. It can be a bit bizarre sometimes but then he's known for that. Perhaps that's why people like the 'new' tracks better overall?

Very well put WLTPTB. After all, it's a biz and they've been in the biz with their product for half a century. Their first half of existance has been laying down up the creative foundations of the company (1962-1986ish). Their second and has been financially maintaining that legacy for the (roughly) second half of 50 years by saying YES to a smart Canadian businessman who took a risk in 1989.
Anytime the company put forth creative product during the second half of existance (touring machine first and foremost), and it was actually genuinely good felt truly like a cause for celebration. I'm thinking of Mick sneaking in Wandering Spirit on us neary 20 years ago in between company tours... things like Thru and Thru, Saint of Me, Out of Control (especially live). Moments like that were truly special because my expectations after Dirty Work and Steel Wheels were lowered considerably.
But those glimses of authentic inspiration gave me chills, and made me think "I wonder if this is what it was like for older fans in the 60's and 70's felt - new music when they were a creative band". What has made things interesting again in the last couple of years (post Keith playing guitar) is Jagger diving into the vaults! It has actually got me excited about new creative product by the comany again!!
Gonna watch Live in Texas to celebrate and maybe even turn my curiosoty of any 50th Anniversary kind of spectacle into genuine excitement!
