A good guy. One of the first hits he wrote was for Marvin Gaye and Tami Terrell.

Another great song writer gone. I often used to see him and Valerie Simpson walking around mid-town New York and they always looked so happy together. He just seemed like a good guy. We once exchanged hellos when he crossed the street to where I was standing and I was treated to one of his lovely smiles. RIP, Nick.

No, no, no - that's terrible. What a loss. He and Valerie were always such positive, energetic people. R.I.P.

thanks for posting the NT times obituary. They were a very powerful, soulful songwriting team. Condolences to Valerie and family.

Peter Frampton is saying on Facebook that Ashford wrote 'I Don't Need No Doctor' that Humble Pie did.

Roger Friedman has a very nice, long article about Nick & Valerie on the FoxNews (I know, I know...) site today.

I always loved the idea of this couple together so long, and having written all these great songs. I had been listening alot to Any WInehouse's "Tears Dry On Their Own", which used the construction of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" as a foundation.
That song is their masterpiece. The way it builds, peaks...there is an urgency to it that is hard to capture. It's too bad they're more known for "Solid".
RIP
