2002 ABKCO Reissues
Posted by: DragonSky ()

I'm gearing up to finally get the 2002 ABKCO Reissues. A friend of mine got Beggars and it sounded incredible. My wife has Hot Rocks and it sounds great. I have Forty Licks and disc one sounds fantastic. I'm leaning towards the UK versions over the US versions that are available.

Any to avoid/not bother with or get them all?

Get 'em all while you can though it's argued the UK version of "Aftermath" is superfluous. They are out of print but some titles can likely still be found in big box stores or used on eBay.

Believe it or not, at Best Buy I found High Tide and Green Grass and at Walmart More Hot Rocks...both stores they were the last ones...my daughter got me Flowers on line somewhere, but I was shocked to see the other two at Best Buy and Walmart!

You can try buying some of these albums (both volumes of Big Hits and Satanic through Bleed) on SHM-SACD. It'll cost you a lot more, though.

I have them all, and they are must owns. Unbelievable sound, and great packaging.

Yes, you can still find some titles at the big box retailers, as most people really don't buy from them, so they seem to sit as inventory for a very long time.

As they are out of print, I think they're a little more expensive now online...don't remember the last time I've checked ebay or amazon.

You are right treacle fingers...Exile on Main Street is sitting in our Walmart under Rolling Stones, it's been there for months and no one has bought it for 9.99 dollars! I haven't because I really only like up to Let it Bleed...hope that doesn't make me a bad fan...but stuck in the sixties.

It does not make you a 'bad fan'. If you have the cash, you should consider picking it up though, as you may grow to like it. It is the one album that I can listen to anytime...it really never gets old.

I know that digipack versions are becoming more and more scarce. I see a lot of the reissues in the normal jewel case. I always preferred the digipack. I remember being a freshman in college the day it came out and taking 2 buses to get to the mall to buy Ya-Ya's.

Yes, you can see how the music was very similar...Exile seemed quite dark and depressing, everyone was coming out of the exciting sixties and it seems the music reflected that...I know Exile period is considered by many their best, and who could beat Mick Taylors beautiful slides from his time in the band..., just prefer their great melodies from the sixties period..eye popping smiley

Argued by whom? That's nonsense, as it's the only place you can find the full-length version of "Out Of Time".

I read in an interview with ABKCO that they are planning to re-issue another batch of cd's. Next year would be quite perfect. And now that they have finally re-issued the first two uk albums and the uk Big Hits comps, digitally, they likely to be made available on cd next time around as well.

Not to mention the stereo mix of Mother's Little Helper.

I can't imagine you'll be sorry...give it some time to grow on you, it's that kind of an album.

I actually find Exile far more upbeat than Let it Bleed. That, I think is a fairly dark album. I mean, it kicks off with Gimme Shelter (possibly their best song, but obviously very dark).

Well, good point, really never thought of it that way, maybe because Gimme Shelter was just about the best ever song of the sixties ( after Paint It, Black!) now that's a real dark one too... Literally and figuratively !

Well throw in Midnight Rambler and Monkey Man as well.

I love that album, may even be their best, but for some reason I actually listen to Exile much more than I do LIB.

Got all the hybrids.

It's the SACD hybrid digipacks that are more scarce. The DSD version in plastic cases are
abundant. Right?

Not sure, you are perhaps correct about the DSD in plastic cases...I have the digipacks.

When they were first released, they each came with a 'inaugural sticker' and unique puzzle piece.

The only one I was not able to get with the inaugural sticker, much to my chagrin, was Let it Bleed.

Good god, looks like another chance to spend 1000+ bucks for the same old music in a new disguise...and in February, they'll rerelease the complete catalog again on SHM-SACD in miniature sleeves...and for the anniversary sometime mid-2012, the same procedure again with special "50th Anniversary" stickers on the sleeve, plus new editions of the catalog on SHM-SACD based on the recent 24/96 HQ digital downloads, and for Christmas 2012 - guess what, probably speed corrected versions on a new chemical formula SHM-SACD in Digipacks, then in early 2013 the same stuff in Mini-LP sleeves with giant fold-out posters, then...

The ABKCO reissued vinyl of Beggars Banquet sounds absolutely fantastic. One of the best sounding I've ever heard.

In general, last years box set of sixties UK releases, was the most fantastic release yet, soundwise, on physical medium. They actually created a much 'warmer' sound than any of the cd re-issues, even if they where taken from the same digital files as the 2002 SACD's. A crystal-clear example of how much the mastering process is important for good sound.

Out of those 60s reissues, I only have Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed so far. I'll have to start buying the rest if they sound as good as those two! Especially Beggars.

Can anyone comment on this other box set - the one that has the albums from 1971 onwards? [www.rollingstones.com] I didn't even know most of those albums had been reissued on vinyl.

I'm gearing up to finally get the 2002 ABKCO Reissues.

Just get them from HDtracks : [www.hdtracks.com]

They are the same remasters from 2002 (by Bob Ludwig) and in high definition.

I found Beggars and Bleed at Best Buy. DSD issues. I've seen the digi-paks but I've never cared for those.

Best Buy also had Hot Rocks. That's it for the ABKCOs. All the rest were the Rolling Stones Records/Virgin Records LPs.

I also picked up Ladies $ Gentlemen... on DVD. I saw it last week there on Blu-ray but not yesterday. Oh well.

I don't understand why the ABKCOs are out of print. How could that be? What happened? How can that actually be when they're still available? I would think there's more demand for the ABKCOs than the UMes ha ha ha ha, with exception for Sticky Fingers, Some Girls and Tattoo You.

This makes no sense. First it says:

The Rolling Stones plan to sell high-quality downloads of their first 27 records for the first time online.

They don't have 49 LPs out, which means they can't have a second 27 records. spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Then it says:

HDtracks already has a deal in place with the Universal Music Group, the biggest of the four majors. The Rolling Stones signed with Universal in 2008 after a long stint with EMI Music, though the band's new label hasn't listed any Rolling Stones music on HDtracks.

UMe has Sticky Fingers onward and they certainly did not record 27 original albums before hooking up with Atlantic in 1970. So what gives? UMe is/has put them out then.

From what it says - and does not say - the SACDs are out of print but not the DSD issues.

It's because they count in both US and UK issues.
