In 1958, Robert Frank took a black and white photograph of a group of photos and "pitch cards" that had been arranged on a wall by a person or persons unknown.

The individual images showed performers and so-called “freaks,” some fairly well-known in those days. Many of the performers' names have been forgotten for a long time.

Most sources indicate that Frank took this shot in a tattoo parlor -- Possibly on 8th Ave in NYC, maybe out West on Route 66.

However I am fairly sure that Frank took this photograph at Hubert's Dime Museum on 42nd Street in NYC.

A similar layout on the back cover (verso ) is a collage by designer John Van Hamersveld that was comprised of stills from Frank's 8mm film of the Stones themselves, shot on L.A.'s seedy Main Street.
The visual analogy effectively compared the Stones themselves to performing freaks, like those on the front cover.
The overall album package graphic design by Van Hamersveld is strongly associated with the music on Exile, and is considered a classic by many fans.
