The or not the. Thats the question
Posted by: deewee ()

How come our band has different names on their records. On some they are The Rolling Stones and on others just Rolling Stones. What is the real name officially?

Re: The or not the. Thats the question
Date: March 7, 2016 11:56

The Rolling Stones.

Before that, The Rollin' Stones.

It seems to me that on the album covers of the 1980's the "The" was omitted.
But yeah, "officially" they are called "The greatest rock 'n' roll band in the world:
The Rolling Stones".

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

I've wondered that. LET IT BLEED, EOMS, TATTOO YOU, UNDERCOVER, STEEL WHEELS and VOODOO LOUNGE say Rolling Stones, yet BEGGARS BANQUET, GOATS HEAD SOUP, BLACK AND BLUE, EMOTIONAL RESCUE and BRIDGES TO BABYLON say The Rolling Stones.

Some live albums are The Rolling Stones.

Maybe "the" doesn't fit at times and it's simply about convenience? For instance Rolling Stones-Steel Wheels, Rolling Stones-Voodoo Lounge. If "the" was in there it would throw the whole thing off. That's the way I see it anyway. Good question though.

From [www.iorr.org] :

Interestingly, the quotation marks include "Rollin' Stones", not the 'the'.

A newsletter (probably Jazz News) announced them as "The Rolling Stones" for the 12th July 1962.

1st UK-Single from 7-Jun-1963:

But a 'Come On' review from the 'New Musical Express', 7-Jun-1963, wrote: "ROLLING STONES" - see the Book 'The Rolling Stones 50' - Thames & Hudson, 2012.

The same in the 'Daily Mirror' on 13-Jun-1963: they mentioned the "ROLLING STONES" (see also the Book 'The Rolling Stones 50' - Thames & Hudson, 2012).

Lrix, wow you have a Come On Demo! I've been searching for one of those for a long time. I like that it has earlier M/T tax code. You ever play it? Looks in great condition.

Is it that the term 'Rolling Stones' is used to collectively describe the individual members and so the determiner 'the' is of necessity?

When the 'the' comes at the start of a sentence or slogan, it is naturally capitalised.

The Stones organisation seems to include or drop the 'the' as and when - type into your web browser 'www.rollingstones.com' and you reach 'The Rolling Stones Official Website', advertising both 'THE ROLLING STONES EXHIBITIONISM' and 'ROLLING STONES EN CUBA'.

Perhaps the 'the' is dropped in certain situations for marketing purposes; 'Rolling Stones' as a brand; a concept, as opposed to 'The Rolling Stones' as four musicians.

...and if they dó add it, they say "Eston-és" (adding an 'e' to the start, like they do with all words that start with 's', as far as I know.)

I think it's cute! smoking smiley

"used to refer to a person, place, or thing that is unique."

Just fashion. In the early 60s nearly all "groups" were The Somethings (or Somebody and the Somethings) but by the end of the decade you had to be called just Something (and be a "band" ) to sound cool and modern. As the Stones were born in 1963 they are THE Rolling Stones, but at times when that made them sound dated they have dropped the The (wasn't there a group called The The once?)

Nowadays you can call your band whatever you like and being The Somethings no longer makes you sound as if you came out of the Ark.

We wouldn't know who The Who were, if the The were not there, would we?

And yes, The The, I remember that. If there ever was a "band" that was not really a band,
it must have been The The. More changes of personal than Deep Purple. So maybe any of
the versions of this band could be called "a The".

This is never a problem in the Swedish language since we don't use the definite article (the) before the noun. So in Sweden it's Rolling Stones only.

Here's a question I've wondered about but never investigated: it was standard practice for British LPs to have 14 tracks and American LPs 12. The Stones stopped doing that, I think, with Satanic Majesties. Did that standard just disappear — or was there a deliberate break?
