Fun stuff, never gets old does it? They were so fresh. Keith really shined on those versions, while MT just chilled. MJ was honing his stage act, really exciting to watch him in '69. And Charlie, man he is totally digging that beat. I watch so much of this stuff, through '73, when MT was playing like a serpent was coming out of his @ss.

Great video. I would like to see the Stones cover more Chuck Berry songs. Actually, Berry's version of his own song is much better than this, but this version is very good.

There was a long thread here once about the drum mess up in the beginning. Love this clip.

Cool cool smiley no doubt about it - but what version are we watchin/listening to?
Bill is v-e-r-y prominent here, then of course this is mono! at -0dB, probably using the standard YouTube compressor too.

This one's stereo at -6dB, not maxed out.

my point? well, ......just sayin'

My favorite part is when Charlie tracks Mick across the stage at the end of the song. Totally locked in!

Well, I think you're talking about Chuck's studio-version...because I never heard a better live version than the 69-tour version by the Stones.

Exactly!! Shame they don't do Berrys anymore . .

I don't knwow why they cannot or don't want to dig that groove anymore.

Pretty simple though. Steady, dancing beat and staying focus.

No need for a million eyes contact, hyper this or hyper that, nor for Keith to touch the ground with his guitar. That circus spoils it all.

But maybe the crowd would find it and old timer without the hype and stage gimmicks

I still think their Berry covers in 1969 sounded a bit tired & lethargic. Have a list to Carol (8:50) for the RS covering Berry at their very best:

I think last time was the 97 tour with great Queenie renditions. Or did I forget someting?
After that was the Berry/ Johnson hassle with Keith on J's side . .

They might not be Chuck Berry songs, but 'It's Only Rock & Roll', 'Star Star', 'Respectable', 'Rough Justice' & so many more are really the RS playing Berry...

Yeah, in 1964,65' they were playing the Chuck numbers like fast boogies. But in 1969 it was pure swingin' rock and roll. Any other drummer and it would have sounded kind of soulless, but Charlie makes the groove. And of course Keith.

It seemed to be fashionable to slow things down then (John Lennon with 'Money', The Who with 'Shaking All Over', etc).

This is why I love this site. Just when I think I have seen & heard it all, someone posts a clip like this & surprises me.

Fantastic. Thank you, boston2006.

Greetings from the Jersey Shore.

What a great clip. You can follow everything in Charlie's face. He has always followed Jagger.
Jagger is great in both "meanwhile.." breaks. The first one at 1:07 he appears to actually be "thinkin".
In the second one he's having a ball.

I think it was quite common for Charlie to introduce a song up until 1966 (or maybe 1967). Certainly he also does it at the 1964 NME Poll Winners Concert, & also Honolulu 1966, & if you look at the cover of GLIYWI (the LP) Charlie can be seen with a microphone.
