OT:Harry Potter star Alan Rickman dead at 69

More sad news this week. Alan Rickman became universally famous for his part as Professor Snape in the Harry Potter films as well as the Sheriff Of Nottingham in Robin: Prince Of Thieves and the marvellous Truly, Madly, Deeply. RIP Alan.

Alan Rickman, giant of British film and theatre, dies at 69

A star whose arch features and languid diction were recognisable across the generations, Rickman found a fresh legion of fans with his role as Professor Snape in the Harry Potter films. But the actor had been a big-screen staple since first shooting to global acclaim in 1988, when he starred as Hans Gruber, Bruce Willis’s sardonic, dastardly adversary in Die Hard – a part he was offered two days after arriving in Los Angeles, aged 41.

Gruber was the first of three memorable baddies played by Rickman: he was an outrageous sheriff of Nottingham in 1991’s Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, as well as a terrifying Rasputin in an acclaimed 1995 HBO film.

But Rickman was also a singular leading man: in 1991, he starred as a cellist opposite Juliet Stevenson in Anthony Minghella’s affecting supernatural romance Truly, Madly, Deeply; four years later he was the honourable and modest Col Brandon in Sense and Sensibility, starring and scripted by Emma Thompson. He was to reunite with Thompson many times: they played husband and wife in 2003’s Love, Actually and former lovers in 2010 BBC drama The Song of Lunch.

In 1995, he directed Thompson and her mother, Phyllida Law, in his directorial debut, the acclaimed Scottish drama The Winter Guest. Last year, he reunited with Kate Winslet, another Sense and Sensibility co-star, for his second film as director, A Little Chaos – a period romance set in the gardens of Versailles.

Yet it was Rickman’s work on stage that established him as such a compelling talent, and to which he returned throughout his career. After graduating from Rada, the actor supported himself as a dresser for the likes of Nigel Hawthorne and Ralph Richardson before finding work with the Royal Shakespeare Company (as well as on TV as the slithery Reverend Slope in The Barchester Chronicles).

Wow - I didn't realize he was that old. I hope he will be remembered for more than playing Snape.

Rest in peace, Alan Rickman

I remember him best for his superb performance as the villan in Die Hard. A great actor. Actually, I was obssessed with Robin Hood Prince of Theives as an eight-year-old. His role as the Sheriff of Nottingham certainly sticks in the mind; comical and menacing at the same time.

This has been a horrible few weeks...Lemmy, David Bowie, Angus Scrimm (the iconic "Tall Man" from the Phantasm horror film series), and now the great Alan Rickman.

Very, very sad.

There were some horrible actors in Harry Potter (Ron - mainly the later movies, and his sister stand out - also hated the 2nd Dumbledore) but Snape was one of the better ones! And Gary Oldman of course.

Die Hard (the first) is a Christmas season staple (remember it occurs at an Xmas Eve party or such) to watch, along with the first Gremlins movie (also set at Xmas time, but has zilch to do with Rickman). Rickman played villains very well, though, his role in Sense and Sensibility remains one of my faves. A great actor who will be missed.

One of my co-teachers at work was teary-eyed over Alan Rickman's passing. He said to me, "is it okay that I am more upset about him than David Bowie?" It made me smile...it's touching how an artist can move people so.

I saw that movie at a random showing in a modest strip mall south of L.A. and after the end, two people stood up and one said, "Hi, I'm the director Randall Miller and here's my wife. We just thought we'd drop in on a showing. We'll answer any questions." So they answered questions, including those about Alan Rickman. A great surprise to randomly see a movie and then have the director completely unexpectedly stand up at the end!
