Just want to share this amazing performance with IORR music lovers. Mick and Keith and Charlie aren't the only musicians still bringing it in their seventies. This Queen can sing.

Aretha Franklin at the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors

I watched this last night and was blown away. I think Carol King was as surprised as I was when Aretha sat down behind the piano and played brilliantly, only outdone by her powerful vocal. I can't say I've ever seen her play any instrument before this performance. I truly thought it was a magical moment in music. All hail The Queen, Aretha Franklin.

Always loved Aretha's piano playing..... She should have played more than she did!

It's just a shame that the moron who directed this decided to focus on the audience as much as Aretha. Idiot!!!

Wow! Really, f*ckin' wow! She ain't the Queen of Soul for nothin'. Time to dig those early Atlantic Records albums out of the box and get lost in her music again. Thanks for the post.

Thanks Lass, just watched it with my son...she is amazing still. My go to Aretha is her Rare & Unreleased Recordings comp. She plays the piano beautifully on this one, Sweet Bitter Love...

I guess I just loved her voice so much and never saw her play piano before so I missed that. Catching up now and yes she does play really well.

Yowzer! Thanks for the post BostonLass that was a real treat. That had to be the highlight of the night for Carol King, she was obviously quite moved.

Aretha was (is?) AMAZING.

Personally I would have preferred seeing less of Carol King though! Sorry if that's a minority view.

More Aretha, less Carol.

Yes, definitely. Her reaction was, err, a little over-the-top and embarrassing. Surely a woman of her age and experiences, could have composed herself a little more. Calm down dear, it's only a song.

I loved King's reaction - it made the performance even more magical.

Carole King is one of the honorees, so it's her party. She should be able to behave however she wants, but I can see how some felt it was a little much. I found it refreshingly honest and sweet. She was obviously bowled over by Aretha's performance and it showed. Besides, it was the director's decision, who happens to be someone I used to work with, so I'll let him know next time I see him that some of you didn't like it.

Funny thing is I was doing the same thing Carol King was and I was only seeing it on television.

If I'm not mistaken this was a delayed broadcast and editing was done post so many chances to catch just the right shots to show how this performance moved the whole crowd. And it did move them all and that's the original theme behind this post.

Indeed. Seeing how the honorees react to other artists playing their tunes is one of the coolest things about the Kennedy honors, imo. Who can forget Robert Plant tearing up? I really can't imagine a more appropriate situation for a bit of over reaction. I mean that was truly a stunning performance, by an absolute legend, playing one of Carole Kings best tunes, it certainly brought a few tears in this household. Loved it.
