Billboard's Greatest Artists All Time List

"This unique recap of the chart begins with the Aug. 17, 1963-dated chart, when Billboard combined our two leading pop album charts for stereo and mono releases into one all-encompassing weekly chart. The new chart, then-called Top LP's, would later become known as the Billboard 200.

On this all-time list, albums are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at the lower reaches of the chart earning the least. Due to changes in chart methodology through the years, eras are weighted differently to account for chart turnover rates over various periods. Artists are ranked based on the combined point totals of their albums, as outlined above."

Aren't they no.1 for albums?

The fact that they've brought out so many - think of all the compilations and live albums - must help as far as that particular statistic is concerned.

They didn't sell many copies. Considering even the comps, only HOT ROCKS has sold over 6 million copies. SOME GIRLS, at last count, was up to 6 million, their biggest selling studio album. With HOT ROCKS keep in mind - a majority of those sales are actually half that since it was 2 copies per album so it's counted as 2 records sold... for one purchase... so for 12 million copies only 6 million were purchased.

Not that much compared to some other hits compilations by other bands, huh.

It changed at some point, either in 1991 with... whatever it is, SoundScan, the way things are counted. Double albums now only count as one actual copy sold instead of the false two. But a majority of HOT ROCKS' purchases were done pre-1991 so... yeah, about 6 million people bought it.

More than 6 million for Hot Rocks, it has sold over 1.2 million copies since the latest certification (2002), it has sold over 110k this year alone.
It should be 14 or 15x Platinum (about 7,5 million sold)

So, according to the lists Bob Dylan sells a lot of product ...but isnt a 'great artist".
Interesting.

I was just thinking about that... the phrasing of the title is a little... weird...
