Exile isn´t a concept album, it tells no story, it´s just a string of songs. Excluding the obvious fillers does no harm, you get a better album by doing so, a great single-LP. It´s not like Pink Floyd´s The Wall. Excluding the weak spots of The Wall damages the whole because the story gets lost. Excluding the weak spots of Exile improves it. Just like B2B & VL can be considerably improved by dropping the weak songs. What works with B2B & VL also works with Exile, the result is even more impressive.

This tune billows from the bowels of the distant past....echoing the dark and ominous yet it's uplifting and joyous at the same time.
Fulfills it's rightful spot on Exile, just as every other track has it's rightful place - I'd love to hear a 20 minute extended version of this.
Perfect album start to finish - no question about it.

Yeah RedHC, besides this being a great dark gospel tune replete with Plummer's upright bass runs, this song is the middle of the 3-song segue that to me is the climax of Exile: Ventilator -> Just Want to See His Face -> Let it Loose.

A very unique flavor in their catalogue! (And perhaps a bit of a precursor to later ethereal grooves like Heaven and Continental Drift?)

Eggzactly! That might be my favorite part of the album as well (although I guess any 3 consecutive songs will be great)

The argument is often made that Exile is the greater than the sum of its parts blah blah blah and that tunes like 'I just wanna see his face' can't be truly appreciated if they'Re ripped from their natural 'Exile' setting and nakedly critiqued. In other words, you have to listen to Exile in its entirety every bloody time. But as glorious a listening experience as that is, who has the time? My 6 year old son has yet to say to me 'Daddy, I'll be fine on my own for the next hour, you spark up a few joints and lose yourself in a good record.' And I don't expect him to say that anytime soon. So while I won't call I Just Wanna See His Face or Turd on the Run fillers, I won't be listening to them either. Or if I do, I'd have to create my own shorter album of neglected tunes and force myself to listen to them even though they would theoretically sound worse deprived of context.

I think I'd call it 'Blue CHeese (or is that turd on his face?).' THe track order would be like this (note that all the songs are taken from the Golden Era except the bonus track):

"blah blah blah" is a nice way to blow off its greatness. Of course one can't just listen to an entire album at any time of the day, but that doesn't change its place in rock history, as one of the most important rock albums of all time.

You could similarly "blah blah" any album, White Album, Quadorphenia, London Calling , etc. They are considered great albums, regardless if the listener has time to listen to the entire thing or not.

As for listening to an entire album myself, I will do that when exercising, long drives, sometimes at night when i can't sleep (on mp3 player of course).

IMO, Quadrophenia is legitimately a double album, but the White Album - just like Exile - needs to be trimmed down to a single-LP to fully enjoy it.

A wonderful, beautiful mood vibe piece.

I didn't like it when the album first came out, but now I find it quite listenable. But what it really does is make you use your imagination. This isn't the "Rolling Stones." It's some kind of dark swampy gathering of religious outcasts in the backwoods of some island jungle. You are hiding in the bushes watching and listening to some kind of satanic cult ritual and the black girls are swaying back and forth in the rhythm...

Where somebody got the idea full band tracking was done in LA, I don’t understand. Where is the proof? Certainly not in any interviews by people actually there. Andy Johns said Joe Zagarino engineered overdubs in December and January and began mixing. Johns was brought back in February to mix, not track. The timeline doesn’t make sense to create songs and track the Stones in LA. It was vocals, overdubs, Preston, Plummer, Perkins, and the singers.

This song could have been done years prior in Olympic as a sketch with Whitlock. Jagger could have resurrected it because it fit the vibe and legitimately forgot who played piano so he credited Richards. All more likely than this being created in LA.
