That’s How Strong My Love Is
(Roosevelt Jamison)

Chess Studios, Chicago, Illinois, US, May 10, 1965

Mick Jagger - vocals
Keith Richards - electric guitar
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Brian Jones - organ
Ian Stewart - piano

If I was the sun way up there
I'd go with my love everywhere
I'll be the moon when the sun go down
To let you know I'm still around
That's how strong my love is, baby, that's how strong my love is
That's how strong my love is, that's how strong my love is

I'll be the weeping willow drowning in my tears
You can go swimming when you're here
I'll be the rainbow when the sun is gone
Wrap you in my colors and keep you warm
That's how strong my love is, that's how strong my love is
That's how strong my love is, that's how strong my love is

I'll be the ocean so deep and wide
I'll dry the tears when you cry
I'll be the breeze when the storm is gone
To dry your eyes and keep you warm
That's how strong my love is, that's how strong my love is
That's how strong my love is, baby, that's how strong my love is

That's how strong my love is, that's how strong my love is
That's how strong my love is, baby, that's how strong my love is, yeah

That's how strong my love is, so deep and so wide my love is
Yes, it is so strong, can't get over it, is so wide
You can't get around me, that's how strong my love is
Yeah, it's so strong, so strong, so strong
Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's how strong my love is, is so strong
I wanna tell you, can't say how strong it is
That's how strong my love is

Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham

First released on:

Love the live versions better. Especially Paris 03.

A classic. Bring it back in the setlist.

I love both the studio take and the live versions.

This is one of the cover songs that sealed the deal for me.
Incredible heartfelt performance from Jagger on this one.
The band are playing with soul and sharpness.

I like the Licks live take as well, but the studio version will be my favourite.

Obviously they cared enough for the song, to include it as one of the selected tracks on the deluxe edition of 'GRRR!!!'.

A passionate cover, but without anything to hold my interest.

The studio version shines, and I'd dearly love to see a concert performance
where the Mick isn't distracting me with his overinsistent instructions
to take it down, take it down more now, take it down even quieter

pretty bullet proof cover. a great song and a passionate performance on both the studio and live licks recordings.

This "take it down even quieter" was one of the best things about it for me.

An immense cover version and one of the greatest songs on the Out Of Our Heads album.

For me That's How Strong My Love Is really gave notice that Mick could sing soul ballads as well as belting out the r'n'b and rock'n'roll that the Stones had become famous for.

Don't you just love it when he hits that falsetto on 'to keep you warm'.

And then on the fade out, Mick pledging his love and testifyin' to great God almighty that his love is so strong, so strong, so strong". Go back and check it out for it really is one of his greatest ever vocal performances. Listen carefully and you can hear the roots of I Got The Blues and even Sway on this song.

The other great performance on the cut is Brian Jones' organ playing which is nothing short of magnificent. So soulful and rolling gently like a backwoods river on a hot summer' day. If it was a colour it would be deep blue. It's straight out of a southern Baptist church.

Where did the guy get such a talent? He was really starting to peak at this point and I should imagine his influence loomed very large indeed over those Chess Studio sessions.

When they did in on the 2003 Licks Tour it was a heart-stopping moment, as if a time machine had suddenly transported the 60-year-old Mick back into his 22-year-old body. And yep, I agree with Nikkei - when he told the boys to 'take it down' and then 'take it down even quieter' it was goosebumps and cold chills all over for me.

If I was ever asked to try and distill the essence of the Stones then this song would definitely be one of the examples I'd give. It is part of the groups' DNA.

Now we're really talking. The Rolling Stones - the greatest rock'n'soul band in the world.

standing a few feet away from Mick, watching him give his all to this song at Roseland, was definitely a Stones live highlight for me, for the many shows i have seen.

This is the song that made me a huge fan of the cover-era Rolling Stones. Kind of wish they'd do more at this point in my career. Great singing by Mick, and great arrangement.

Definitely Mick's fantastic vocals steal the show on this one! Too bad they fade it out during the best part.

It makes me depressed just to think about wonderful songs like this. The current Stones are a caricature of their previous selves. This song, like vast majority of Solomon Burke's catalog, is glorious.

One of my favorite Stones slow numbers. This and Cry To Me both showcase Mick's soulful voice on the OOOH album. Great sound from Chess Studios, too.
I like the 03 version, also, when he starts singing Pain In My Heart at the end.

a bit harsh. they are a much older version of themselves, hardly a caricature. they are an incredibly well seasoned, professional group that just doesn't take all that many risks. But 90% of their audience get exactly what they want and pay for and keep coming back.

it's hard to argue with the formula, much as we might try and tweak it if we could.

In 1965 my Mother accompanied Richard's to a recording session, in an old barn made into a studio. I can't recall the location she said, for some reason Maryland sticks in my head. I do know she met him in NY in April 1965 and took "hops" from DC to different locations while they were in the US, recording, shows, ect. Not only am I looking for this "barn" I'm trying to locate photographs and polaroids taken by a Mark Kinnaman of her/him and them, some were stolen from our private collection and as much as I'd like those back, copies would be fine.. Brian Jones fancied a safari hat in many and an unknown boy, @ 4 is in many of them with Jagger at a piano and such. Most were taken at the Ny Academy of Music, Diners and backstage..
Yes, the relationship was short and personal, but the pictures are invaluable to me for other reasons. They may have been sold to Rolling Stone mag., can't find out and of course all her old contacts and numbers are of no use now. Her name, Dianne .. If anyone has any info about that time frame 4/65-8/65 I'd really appreciate it..
Thanks
LBenedetti

One of my favorite Stones songs. It worries me that these older tracks from the Brian Jones era might be slowly forgotten and people just focus on the "big 4" albums.

This performance is as great as any they have done.

I can't see links, but here is (another?) link to 2003 Paris:
[youtu.be]

The band for me at this time (Licks 2003) are a joy for me to watch.
In this video, we have great shots of Charlie, drumming hard, looking real good.
And of course, MJ. Yep. I'll stop here, give this one a '10'
