Status Quo - Quid Pro Quo

A remarkably strong album this late in their career. A must-have, imo!

1. Anna Calvi - Anna Calvi

Amazing debut from lady that Jeff Beck and Eno are raving about. Like a cross between Jeff Buckley and PJ Harvey. Best new thing I've heard for a very long time.

2. PJ Harvey - Let England Shake

Might well be her best ever album. Some beautiful, haunting tunes and great use of samples on a couple of tracks.

3. REM - Collapse Into Now

Fantastic return to form. Bets album since Automatic For The People

4. Radiohead - King Of Limbs

Still weird in places but here they strike a nice balance with their best tunes since OK Computer.

5. Gregg Allman - Low Country Blues

Modern country blues updated and captured in a really great, vibrant sound.

6. Stevie Nicks - In Your Dreams

Her best songs since Mirage and possibly Rumours. Dave Stewart has done a great job.

7. My Morning Jacket - Circuital

You want epic rock, well My Morning Jacket deliver it on this new album that teaches Kings Of Leon a thing or two about that kind of thing.

8. Lucinda Williams - Blessed

Up to her usual high standard of great bar room country rock.

Got the Paul Simon but it's taking a while for it to work its supposed charms on me. The Emmylou Harris I've just got and it's sound good.

"Rome" by Danger Mouse and friends ( Jack White , Nora Jones ) has been a pretty enjoyable listen....

Also, the two Mccartney re-releases have been terrific

Sandy Denny's "Northstar" re-release has also been on the CD player a lot.

Decemerists - The King Is Dead (folkrock): great, great record.

Drive By Truckers - Go-Go Boots (especially the title song)

Warren Haynes - Man in Motion (soulrock, great solo's)

Tedeschi Trucks Band - Revelator (Delaney & Bonnie vs. Duane Allman)

1 mr big- what if: this might be their best album ever. they hold back on the ballads and stick with the hard rockers while adding a bit of modern sound. I wish they had included 1 bluesy track though which is something they usually do.

2 king kobra- self titled : no clue when the last time they release an album of original material but this is the first with almost the entire lineup from the 1st album since the 80’s. paul shortino does a fantastic job handling the vocals. this may be shortino’s best vocal performance of his entire career which says something since he’s almost 60. legend carmine appice lays down some insane drum work which is more amazing when you consider he is in his mid 60’s.

3 whitesnake- forevermore : great album. a return to the more bluesy sound of the SLIDE IT IN album which is my favorite whitesnake album. coverdales vocals get slightly weaker with each new release and I thought the last whitesnake album, good to be bad, overall was a better album. this album lacked the hooks even though it had the sound I wanted from the band

4 hurtsmile-self titled : first album by gary cherone’s new side project. gary’s brother is on guitar and he’s great. the album is like a mix of extreme’s III sides to every story and gary’s band tribe of Judah

5 robbie robertson- how to become clairvoyant : his first new album in over a decade and his first album of non native-american influenced music in about 20 years. this picks up right where he left off 20 years ago although not as strong as his other non native-american influenced albums due to robbie’s vocals become weaker with age.

6 warrant-rockaholic : talk about a shocker. no jani lane the singer/songwriter of the band. robert mason on vocals which is a good thing but this is the bands 3rd singer since 2000. the last album released was in 2006 with vocalist jamie st. james and it was average at best. this album though is killer and if not for the promo copy I was given I would have passed it by based on the factors mentioned already. this is the best warrant album since dog eat dog and the missing presence of lane is not noticed on this release as much as it was on the last non lane album. mason’s vocals just fit the band better than st. james did and mason has the most versatile voice of any warrant singer. mason adds a bit of the bluesy touch he brought to lynch mob and it makes for a more diverse sounding album. the rockers are great and the ballads mix in some modern touches. overall completely shocked.

7 Black Country Communion- 2 : this one is not hitting me the way the first album did. i’ll give it some more time and see if it grows on me. still great grooves, singing, songwriting, etc and that great 70’s feel but after 1 listen i wasn’t blown away like the first release. with a few more spins maybe this will move up a few spots. perhaps this was slightly rushed??

8 los lonely boys- rockpango : an excellent release. still follows their blend of different styles that reminds me of 70’s santana. this might be their weakest album though.

9 scheepers- selftitled : basically a primal fear album under a different name. great vocals though and its funny hearing ripper owens and ralph doing a duet as it sounds like halford singing with halford.

10 gregg allman- low country blues : nice to hear something new by gregg even if its mostly covers. he makes them his own and his voice is still fantastic.

It took me a few listens but I really like the Paul Simon CD "So Beautiful or So What". I bought Eddie Vedder's CD "Ukele Songs" and his live DVD "Water on Road" the same day and the DVD is incredible and I made my own CD out of that and that would be my favorite CD so far this year LOL
