Joss Stone on Her Mick Jagger Supergroup, Writing LP1 in Six Days, and Living in a Volkswagen Named Janice
Joss Stone has been having a good summer. At 24, the Grammy-winning artist helms her own label, Stone’d Records, through which she released her fifth album, LP1, in July; her ex-label, EMI, recently announced the September release of Super Duper Hits: The Best of Joss Stone; and her side-project band, Super Heavy, is gearing up for its debut the very same month. (The supergroup includes Mick Jagger, the Eurythmics' Dave Stewart, Damien Marley, and A.R. Rahman. For real.) We spoke with Stone about her nomadic last few months (she's been road-tripping through Europe and sleeping in her van), Jagger's intellect, and recording an album in six days.
.....
....
Did you run into Jack White? I’d like to think he’s the unofficial mayor of Nashville.
If I had stayed longer, maybe. I was only there for a blink of an eye. I met him once in New York. He said he really liked my cover of “Fell in Love With a Girl” and [that he] slowed it down in his sets so it’s at the tempo I played it. It was such a lovely compliment, like, Oh, thank God you liked it, man. When you cover a
song, it’s a bit scary. You don’t want to disappoint the other artist. It was a big relief.

Speaking of big artists, you’re working with Mick Jagger, Damien Marley, and Dave Stewart in Super Heavy. What’s that like?
Super Heavy is Dave’s brainchild. He called Mick, and when those two get together, it’s over; it’s happened. We got everyone together in a room, miked them up, and just made noise for two weeks. Hopefully we’ll be able to tour. It’ll be up to Mick, really.

Is Mick as crazy as he seems?
He’s very far from crazy. He’s very intelligent. He knows exactly what he’s doing.

That’s a bummer. You seem like a pretty tame bunch, then.
Well, I only sing songs. Thank God, eh?

In the end it sounds more like Jagger's album
There are 7-8 songs with Mick on lead. I especially like Energy(with great Mick's harp).

come on, 42000 views and there is no discussion.
new Jagger's songs on my opinion is guite relevant topic for debate

I don't know...how can anyone who loves Jagger and the Stones not feel joy seeing him in the studio having a blast. Favorite scene: Jagger playing air-keyboards in control room.

Love the sound of the songs from the previews. Can't wait for the album!

"never gonna change" is instant classic mick ballad, you dont need more than 90 seconds to understand that
very happy too hear that he is still capable of such things

I have listened to all the snippets a few times now, and surprisingly it sounds to me like Mick is the weak link in this group.

There are some nice moments there, but Mick's singing is not good here, imo.

from the snippets i think i can recognize some of the weaknesses in late mick's songwriting (energy, i cant take it no more) but there seems to be a lot of good stuff in there, not fundamental in music history of course but good and funny ) take for example the killer ska of common ground... veeeeery sweet

Although they are only snippets with bad soundquality, I like what I hear.

For me, the best part of the preview page is that based on the minute or so of each song, it would appear Mick has a more significant role on 8 or 9 of the tracks than the two singles indicated.

(Lyrics "Common Ground" )

Have a look at SuperHeavy, can't deny a mixture
Its remaining on your stereo just like a fixture
When you see us all together, what a pretty picture

Autumn Agenda: Critics choice for the new season
From Ralph Fiennes in The Tempest to Kirsten Dunst in a pond, Robert Harris's zeitgeist thriller to Mick Jagger's super group, our experts pick the best.
Album – SuperHeavy: SuperHeavy
A&M, Sept 19
Perhaps the unlikeliest supergroup ever, Superheavy features three distinctive vocalists: Mick Jagger, Joss Stone and Damian Marley, with ex-Eurythmic Dave Stewart and top Indian film composer A?R Rahman. It might be an awful world-music gumbo but with all that extraordinary talent in the same studio, it’s worth a peek.

Listened to all the tracks a couple of times now ... well, Super Heavy is a good thing but I hate to say that I don't like Mick's vocals - they don't seem to gel with the others very well and that's because he seems to follow the route that started with the Exile bonus tracks and Watching The River Flow - this nasal, overexpressing tone that sounds like a caricature of the "true" Mick or like someone trying to imitate Mick, but not in a good way.

Is that RS cover from a European edition? I saw the new RS yesterday and it had George Harrison on the cover.

Looks as though they're pressing this on vinyl as well.

I've revised my Amazon order to reflect the deluxe CD, and the vinyl.

I know, it's a sickness.

A few nights ago on PBS's Tavis Smiley show, Dave Stewart elaborated
on SuperHeavy's creation myth:

Tavis: So, SuperHeavy, the rundown that I just offered a moment ago is pretty
impressive. How did a group like SuperHeavy…how did that happen?

Stewart: Well, like anything that happens in my sort of universe or in my
head, it’s triggered by…I was up in the hills in Jamaica where I co-own a
house with a friend of mine and his family. In Jamaica, you know, the sound
systems are like hugely important and every village has some form of sound system.

There was one moment where all three sort of neighboring villages were playing
some music, but different stuff. It started to sync together and somebody who
was like toasting on top sounded a little bit like, you know, those guys who
sing the prayers in the morning in Arabic countries, then there was the heavy dub basing.

I had a flash of like, hey, that would be interesting to fuse together, you
know, sort of bluesy music with Jamaican music with some kind of eastern music
and that’s how it started.

I called Mick Jagger about, I don’t know, a few hours later and was talking to
him and we both thought this would be a good experiment.

Then the two of us experimented a bit and then we said who should we get to
work with? Then it all started to become a reality. I called Joss Stone, I
called A.R. Rahman who I’ve known for like 12 years and Joss and I had worked
together before.

Then the last sort of part of the puzzle was Damian Marley because we really
wanted to have this sort of Jamaican feeling, but we wanted somebody who was a
great sort of lyricist and thinking person and that would fit with all of this
sort of experimental music.

Damian is really great at experimenting with different sounds like Welcome to
Jamrock. He’s got all sorts of different sounds and he’s a brilliant lyricist
and he’s got a great sounding voice, so then it was formed.

Tavis: What makes you know or at least believe that all of that thrown into
the…you know, you can throw a bunch of stuff in a pot and call it gumbo and it
all works together. But when you put all that together, how do you know it’s
gonna work in terms of the sound?

Stewart: Well, the roots of a lot of these sounds, really there has to be a
common denominator. Often in a lot of music, blues is a common denominator.
Funny enough, in Asian and in Indian music, it can sound very similar to blues
music. Then the feeling of Jamaican rhythms can work also with a kind of blues
feeling on top.

I’d done some experiments in the past where I’d made a kind of rhythmic track
and then played blues on top of it, so I knew there was a rough semblance of
possibilities that it might work.

I would say, as my old solicitor in England always used to say, when Annie and
I first got wealthy, we couldn’t quite believe it, so I used to keep ringing
him up and I’d say, “Look, are you sure we can buy a car?” He used to go,
“Stewart, you have reason for cautious celebration.” [Laugh]

I always used to hang out really puzzled. How do you cautiously celebrate? So
I had reason for cautious celebration in my mind when I imagined the sound.

Tavis: And are you happy with the way the project came together? We’re gonna
hear it in just of matter of days when it gets released here, but are you
happy with it? I assume you are.

Stewart: Yeah, I love it. In fact, we worked furiously together in like 30
songs and we ended up choosing 16 and mixing them. Then we shot videos and
films and there was very amazing artwork by Shepard Fairey who came and
listened to the stuff and got very excited. Everything about the project, I’m
really happy with.

(The following is from Dave's performance on the show, not SuperHeavyish at
all, more Stonesy or Dylanesque, with, we're sure you'll agree, the hottest
blues rock combo imaginable)

(For what its worth, last night we had an long intense and vivid
dream. We were wandering around the Meatpacking district in
NYC when we caught a glimpse of Dave Stewart just as his
limo door was closing. Traffic was bumper to bumper so we
joined the small crowd that was following the limo to see where
he was going. Sure enough, just like in the Miracle Worker video,
we wound up in a small square where an impromptu stage had
been set up. As we were staring at it, somebody shoved a book of
some sort, loaded with loose papers and notes, into our chest and
said, "Here, hold this for me", and then went up on stage. It was Mick!
And then SuperHeavy played about ten songs before seeming to
disappear into thin air. A very cool promotional gig, and you could
see from all the news camera crews that they had been tipped off.
But then the problems started. Suddenly everybody around us
wanted to see what was in the book Jagger had entrusted to us.
Some were pleading. Some were grabbing. But we held on to it
for dear life. Then three really big thugs, laughing like hyenas, took
ahold of us and roughly relieved us of the book, which really really
upset us. But later we heard the thugs were Mick's employees, sent
to retrieve his property. Damn, Mick! All they had to do was ask.
Anyway, we know SuperHeavy're not touring, but now of course
we wonder about any promotional gigs.)

>> For what its worth, last night we had an long intense and vivid dream.

When we wrote this a few hours ago, we did not realize that Dave and Stevie Nicks have
a shimmeringly wonderfuly new track called "for what its worth",
from her new album "in your dreams".

We think you Stones fans are tough nuts to crack. Except with
SuperHeavy, Dave is doing nothing but writing and recording classic
blues rock (just like you wish Keith was), on Joss's LP1, on Stevie's
In Your Dreams, and on Dave's own "Blackbird Diaries".

Wethinks you Stones fans have only two choices:

1) Stick with blues rock and start showing Dave some love.

or

2) Fcuk blues rock and come on over to the Damian/SuperHeavy side of things.

Now on the US Itunes there are the 90 second samples of all songs, but they are for the most part different than we have heard i.e. Jagger does a slight rap in the song ENERGY

Unfortunately everything I heard from this group is horribly uninspired. The name Superheavy is bad, the MW song is bad and the video is shockingly embarrassing. Mick Jagger seems to have lost all of his style, taste and inspiration.

Fortunately to each his own. I liked everything that I heard. MW is very good song and video is just super. Jagger is surprising and striking - man of his age can still shock. It is a terrific achievement!
