Wyman records with Stones again (sort of)

According to this story about the recently released "Boogie 4 Stu: A Tribute to Ian Stewart," Bill Wyman played on the same track as the Rolling Stones for the first time since 1992 (although his playing was overdubbed). The story is here:

"How Ben Waters got the Stones back together with Bill Wyman"

In his review of the album, Sterling Whitaker write:

Perhaps the most interesting track is "Watching the River Flow," the Dylan song performed by The Rolling Stones. This track reminds us once again that Mick Jagger is a great blues rock singer when he's actually singing instead of posing, and the Stones used to be a great rock band before they morphed into an overblown stadium spectacle with too many sidemen. The track also marks the first time Bill Wyman has played with the Stones since 1992, though he overdubbed his parts at a different time and place. The track still sounds live and raw, the way the band should sound.

Bill may not have officially quit until 1992, but he last recorded with the Stones in January 1991 at the "Highwire"/"Sex Drive" recording sessions. His final official appearance with the Stones was in May 1991 when they taped the music video for "Sex Drive." He represented the band that Fall while appearing at a press junket for AT THE MAX while on his promotional tour for STONE ALONE. Interestingly, he chose not to sign their contract with Virgin Records immediately following AT THE MAX's premiere. It was said that he didn't have to make a decision about his future with the band for another year as Mick and Keith were both at work on solo albums and had touring plans as solo artists. Bill appeared on a UK talk show and announced he had quit in December 1992. He has played with all of the Stones since leaving (except for Keith) at various gigs or parties. The quasi-reunion for the Stu tribute is particularly bittersweet when seen from that perspective. It's great there's a track with all of them, but what a pity they didn't actually play together.

I don't like Mick's vocal on this track.

what a great quote....perfectly put:

Might be a great quote, but the musical evidence doesnt match it. Especially as, far from being live and raw, Jagger overdubbed his vocal in a very brief session in his home in France after the basic track was e-mailed to him. And its a vocal which has never been more 'posing' and 'overblown' IMO. It mars what is an otherwise fine cover.

Mick's vocals are the best thing about this recording. Otherwise the musicianship doesn't do much for me (it's not bad, but it's not outstanding either).

What the hell happened in the solo?

Oh, nothing. Nothing at all.

I like the song and hope The Stones will continue to make music in this direction. Also, I usually enjoy their attempts at modern music. But of course people like us will pluck them both apart. They can't win.

Here's a much better version of the Rolling Stones playing "Watching the River Flow". Unfortunately, it's not by the Stones.

Face it, the magic of the Stones was Bill, Keith & Charlie jamming into something great. Mailing a tape (or whatever format it arrives in) around the world for different people to add their parts does not create that magic. That's why the live performance was so much better.

Jagger should have some sense of pride. Just mailing it in.
