(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

RCA Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, US, May 11 & 12, 1965

Mick Jagger - lead vocals, backing vocals
Keith Richards - acoustic guitar, electric guitar, backing vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Ian Stewart - piano
Jack Nitzsche - tambourine

I can't get no satisfaction, I can't get no satisfaction
'Cause I try and I try and I try and I try
I can't get no, I can't get no

When I'm drivin' in my car and a man comes on the radio
He's tellin' me more and more about some useless information
Supposed to fire my imagination
I can't get no, oh no-no-no, hey-hey-hey, that's what I say

I can't get no satisfaction, I can't get no satisfaction
'Cause I try and I try and I try and I try
I can't get no, I can't get no

When I'm watchin' my TV and a man comes on and tells me
How white my shirts can be, but he can't be a man 'cause he doesn't smoke
The same cigarettes as me
I can't get no, oh no-no-no, hey-hey-hey, that's what I say

I can't get no satisfaction, I can't get no girl reaction
'Cause I try and I try and I try and I try
I can't get no, I can't get no

When I'm ridin' round the world and I'm doin' this and I'm signin' that
And I'm tryin' to make some girl
Who tells me, baby, better come back maybe next week
'Cause you see I'm on a losing streak
I can't get no, oh no-no-no, hey-hey-hey, that's what I say

I can't get no, I can't get no, I can't get no
Satisfaction, no satisfaction, no satisfaction, no satisfaction, I can't get no

Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction /
The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man” 7” single
(London 9766) US, May 27, 1965

Rock 'n Roll would never be the same after this song.

Officially released live versions on Flashpoint, Live Licks and Shine a Light too.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Kill me, but I think it's highly overrated. Like Keith & Mick said: an album filler.

Stupid thing to say, it was better to say we didn't expect it would be a hit.
And if they say it's an album filler why they released it as a single back then?

Because Brian / Bill / Charlie / Stu / Andrew convinced them otherwise in a vote if I remember correctly.

Where does this thing about Brian not playing on it come from? What is there that proves he didn't play the acouistic guitar?

Like a nuclear bomb dropping on the artifice and emptiness of 1950s/early-1960s commercial mainstream culture, this track instantly and forever transformed not just the sound of rock and roll music but our awareness of the potential of this music to change the world. With (deservedly) the most famous guitar riff ever, this song formed the blueprint for the Stones future work and indeed for rock music itself. A glorious, shining affirmation of the human spirit, "Satisfaction" reverberates and echoes today, sounding as fresh and exciting as it did upon its release.

Great, great song. One of the things I love most about this song and Brown sugar is that they both have the complementary acoustic guitar part behind the main riff. I wish they would do that more often, I think it would have made a lot of the bigger bang songs much better.

It would be interesting for people to try to guess how many times they have heard the song "Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones. Even if you dont seek it out, you will hear it on the radio or tv somewhere.

I guess I have heard it about 1,500 times in my lifetime. Just a guess. Even someone who hates the Stones has probably heard it 500 times without trying.

(By the way, my favorite part of Satisfaction is the piano playing by Ian Stewart, which you can barely hear on AM radio, but is more audible on the digital recordings.)

Simply the greatest pop song of all time. The beginning of garage punk, rock and punk itself - all can be traced down to this one incredible gem of a song.

The way it starts up with that incessant riff, that grows and grows and carries Jagger's howling tale of sexual frustration right down the rock'n'roll highway.

It's the song that nearly every hot blooded male - and probably females too - can relate to - not getting your way in a phoney bullshit world. And all the while you're singing your head off to it on the dance floor or in a car imagining all the dumbass authority figures that you just want to blow away.

And you know what - it still sounds just as great today as it did the day it came out. Pure pop genius.

I guess that's true but more people would have heard Satisfaction.

Speaking of Louie, Louie...There's a book written about it that tells how Hoover's FBI spent a lot of time trying to decipher the lyrics for a suspected obscenity charge. Just like all the kids at the time, they could not figure them out either. As I recall, the lyrics of the song were sold for a few hundred dollars during a meeting at Jola Bowl on La Brea just north of Florence in Inglewood, California. I played and goofed around there many times in the '60's. It was very close to where we once lived. Not sure if the bowling alley is still there.

Besides the famous opening riff, the rhythm playing on Satisfaction is terrific. I am interested to know what part Brian played on the song. Rhythm-wise he always had something to contribute. For me the song seems to get more relevant as time goes on. If written today I'd call it (I'm) Fed Up (or Disgusted).

I'd love to hear the original unreleased version without the fuzz guitar & with harmonica. I believe the backing track (with a live vocal) was used here...

Andrew Oldham says Jack Nitzsche played the piano, and also that:
"Keith overdubbed the magical fuzz...He then laid down a bed of acoustic guitars in order for Mick to have something to ballad the verses to...".
(From "2Stoned" )

Even if Andrew remembers this right, Brian could still have played acoustic on the basic track.

For you Charlie Watts fans, listen to the drummer on Louie , Louie and tell me which is more exciting, Watt's playing on Satisfaction or the drummer on Louie?

The Kingsmen's studio version was recorded in one take.

Charlie...

I wish he'd play the same way as the studio version when playing the song on stage, something I don't think he's done since the Brian era.

Great rn'r tune. Everyone knows it. One of the first riffs that you learn on a guitar.

On Shine A Light's version, I like how keith rides that open E, for a couple notes. Then nails the first 2 Bs. Correct me if I'm wrong. I think that is what he is playing.
