It think there are some people who just get on your nerves and there is nothing anyone can say to change your mind. I get the Cruise-hate, but I can't help feelnig for the guy - he seems so lost.
On the other hand, I can't watch Pitt in anything. He's got the seriousface, the hurt face, the most contrived and whiny whimper in film history and he's the got the cool act. No thanks.
CindyC, I get where you're coming from, but I freakin love Beatty, just something from my childhood...so there you go.

And Whitem mentioned Keanu Reeves, the biggest mystery in Hollywood history. This guy makes Victor Mature look like young Deniro. Its one thing to suck, but this guy keeps getting work on prestige films with prestige directors...a mystery! He's painfully bad.
I have a cousin who loves Reeves and she had the nerve to mock my defense of Mconaughey. So there you go, its all subjective.
Except Reeves, he sucks.

I also find Deniro painfully over-the-top in his latter years. I guess its like when we criticize the Stones for being lazy.

he was great in Tropic Thunder as well, in my opinion.

Yeah, in Eyes Wide Shut too. But he ruined "The Color of Money" by his hambone performance next to the nuanced class act that was Paul Newman.

My favorite Tom Cruise is the trigger happy cadet captain in "Taps" (1981).

Will Ferrell? A couple good scenes, e.g., cowbell and "stay classy, San Diego," but not much else that's even remotely funny.

The only one on your list that I do like to watch is Johnny Depp, and then only when he is cleaned up and wearing formal clothes. Like Kate Moss, he has an enigmatic, complex, beautiful face that I never tire of seeing.

On the other hand, I do like Will Ferrell a lot; Buddy the elf never fails to make me laugh, as well as Stepbrothers. Perhaps I like him because I have never seen him in comedy skits on tv.

However, if you want to talk about French actors, I have a lot to say. Especially about ordinary, unattractive men always being paired with gorgeous young women.

They don't make 'em like Paul Newman anymore. That guy just had it. Check out "Cool Hand Luke", "the Hustler", or my favorite - "Hud". For females, none of the current crop of undernourished thespians matches Ingrid bergman in her prime, in my opinion, though I do kind of like that Kate Winslet.

Nick Cage. Plays the same role in every bleeding film, awful actor and considerably overrated, in my humble opinion.

I've liked Tom Cruise ever since he did Risky Business with Rebecca De Mornay.
He's a fine actor and I don't give a s about his antics outside the movies.

2. Leonardo Dicaprio - seems to take himself too seriously, and again, has never moved as an adult actor. (and it pains me that Scorsese is in love with this guy)

Watching Leo try to hold his own going up against Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs Of New York was truly embarrassing. It was as if the oscar-winning Lewis had graciously agreed to play scenes with the star of the local high school drama club.

I never liked Tom Hanks, or Michael Douglas.

One of my favorite current actors is Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Agree with you about Cage but I don't think he's overrated anymore. He' become kind of a laughingstock. Remember the promising career he seemingly had after "Leaving Las Vegas". Then he took any job offered, and made a series of forgettable films.

Almost all actors are overrated. They are just tools for the director. Their main skill is to memorize lines. They are often choosen, especially women actors, for their looks. Brad Pitt became a star because he had the right looks, exactly like Julia Roberts.

Excuse me sir, you're talking about my future husband! In my dreams smiling smiley He has done some really good performances though, particularly with self-loathing characters: Thumb-Sucker, The Gift, The Last Time I Committed Suicide, Life Under Water.

People I can't stand: Angelina Jolie (phony!). George Clooney (not as attractive as he thinks he is). Kate Hudson, Ashley Judd (bloody annoying).

Whew. Got that off my chest.

One actor I enjoy is John Goodman. Although his physical type is not one I usually find attractive, I find him very masculine and compelling and actually kind of sexy. I love his voice.

Keanu Reeves is quite possibly the stupidest actor I have ever seen.

Well than there are the women...

Kate Hudson: she was cute in "Almost Famous", but got too cute.
Jennifer Aniston: don't get it. I like her, but as an actress, she's just ok.
Angelina: loved her in "Girl, Interrupted. But she seems to have been elevated to some pristine level of existence. Many people do charity work, and I don't doubt her sincerity, but people treat Brangelina like they're some kind of collective higher being and Brad and Angie seem to be believing it.
It's harder to pick "overrated" female actors simply because women in Hollywood have a shorter shelf live as they age.

Several of the actors that folks say are terrible, however, it is not that they are bad actors it is that they have bad managers and pick terrible roles. Cage is a prime example. After Leaving Los Vegas he seemed hell bent on picking light weight roles or just plane old "fun" roles, like Con Air. But then he does something like Adaptation, which was phenomenal. Some other good ones, Matchstick Men. And Kick Ass. All very good. Then he does schlock like Ghost Rider and Sorcerer's Apprentice.

Pitt has had a few really good roles as well. 12 Monkeys (nominated for best supporting actor), and Snatch is FANTASTIC! Then he does dross...

I totally disagree with you Tatters on Gangs of New York. Yes, Daniel Day Lewis was great, but so was DiCaprio. He played the part to perfection. And they were totally different roles with different motivations.

I like Leo in his younger days, "Basketball Diaries", "Gilbert Grape", but he started hanging out with Scorsese and started taking himself too seriously. He's talented, but in certain roles he doesn't work, like the being the twerpiest Howard Hughes ever.

i agree. when i watch him..it's like watching a kid playing dress-up.
but i'm sure i'm not his target audience.

I feel the same way about a lot of young actors, but I think it's really more a case of me getting older.

He played the part of an extremely dull and rather uninteresting lad to perfection.
