Perfection!
Date: January 7, 2015 16:25

The thread about show announcing lead me back to Texas... and Some Girls.

What a brilliant version of Imagination this is! Everybody is playing their hearts out.

From 5:15 the band is at their absolute peak. Incredible. Fantastic thumbs up

I like the groove of the Beacon-2006-version better
but the vocals on this one are incredible eye popping smiley
Love it to hear Keith and Ronnie doing backing vocals!

Yes: Mick´s Vocals - so pronounced, various, elegant.
So Mick.
And what a vocal comeback after all that (mostly) shouting and belling through the ´75 tour.

Indeed. And while I like the 81 tour generally, vocally he's far better here.

My fav version of this song. Perfection.

It's cheap fun. It's trashy. It's too long. 45 plus years later I can listen to LQ, note for note, over and over, but this song does not hold up for me. Joe Strummer once said about The Ramones "For thirty minutes it was perfection, but no one could take 31." That's the way I feel about this song. I listened to it, enjoyed it, then I am done. It's excitement is too accessible.

Lots of noise and so little music... but that's how they were in 78!
I'll take the 1981 sophisticated arrangement over the one played in 78.

Otoh just the sight of a healthy animated alive Keef must have filled fans with joy back then. So... let's rejoice!

And honestly I don't think Fort Worth was the best show of the tour. Bqck in 96 when the TSP boot came out that show already kinda bored me. It's so stiff...
Alas apart from Detroit thumbs up the real kick-ass shows of 78 only exist in poor aud quality.

It's got great energy but I'm less than impressed with Ronnie's contribution. What a treat it would have been to have MT playing on this one.

What's that? Isn't that jumpin' Michael Phillip Jagger who has a jack flash?

The best live version is from Detroit 78 IMO.

Taylor played on it in 1981 without improving it. He did add some new stuff to it, though.

Hard to imagine he didn't improve it but I'll take your word for it. And hey don't be too surprised about my Ronnie comments. I have never really been a fan of his playing except with the Faces and a few occasions with the Stones. He's good on Beast of Burden and I dig his pedal steel attempts but his lead playing (and tone) bores the daylights out of me. Just one man's opinion.

peace

Fair enough, my friend. However, Ronnie's playing on Imagination is exactly what many fans dig about the track, hence the eyerolling smiling smiley

It's the same thing when people don't see the light with Taylor's playing on Sway or I'm Free.

The Woodists seem to make a lot of noise of that one night deal with Taylor in 1981, like "look, this is would have been like if Taylor had been onboard still, that is, no miracles happening, not improving it". I always found that funny. A lot of expectations from a man who hadn't played with the band for ages, not probably even rehearsing with them before the show, playing songs he had never done before, good if even had heard before.... Probably all he could do was "adding some stuff" by his natural musicality ad adaptation skills, but that doesn't say anything what he could have done had he been properly integrated to the band, being familiar with the songs to serve them with all volume of his imagination and skills, like he did from 1969 to 1973.

Just saying.

So this thread is basically a (Woodist) reaction to recent appraisal of Taylor in "Sway" thread?grinning smiley

I guess those "many fans" do think that it is Ronnie's contribution which "makes the song"..winking smiley
