Tough question and very hard to just pick three albums.

I'd recommend one from each eras (Jones/Taylor/Wood):
"Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out" which is a brilliant live album.
"Beggars Banquet". Very basic raw rock and great album from Brian era.
"Sticky Fingers". Great riffs and solos.
And when you're looking at other direction I would slip in "Some Girls" smiling smiley

Three or four albums. Who counts anyway? eye rolling smiley

Great how these two unrelated threads got stitched together. One guy was asking for three Stones albums, the other guy was asking for three stoner albums. smoking smiley

I'm new to The Rolling Stones, and was hoping you guys could recommend me three albums that I could buy to give me a good taster of what TRS are about.

Thanks

Kevin

Hi,
I can suggest you to buy
- Let it Bleed (1969)
- Exile on Main Street (1972)
- Tattoo You (1981)

there is also a live album like Get Yer Ya-Yas out (1969) that deserves to be included in your CD library

Beggars Banquet (1968)
Let it Bleed (1969)
Sticky Fingers (1971)
Some Girls (1978)
Tattoo You (1981)

Sorry, Can't stick to just three.

Or start with 40 Licks, the compilation from their whole career and then get the above five.

Prepare to be wowed.

Thanks all. It seems 68-71 was a purple patch so I'll go for Let It Bleed, Beggars Banquet and Sticky Fingers and expand outwards from there.

It seems Tattoo You is a popular choice so maybe that too smiling smiley

You're right TaT it is difficult to pick just three!

Three is tough. But don't leave out Aftermath. You gotta get Brian's contributions in there somewhere.

For "meat".

I'd actually reccomend the "Singles Collection: The London Years" compilation if you can find it. It's a three disc set and it offers a fairly good overview of the Brian Jones era, which is sometimes overlooked. This set serves as a good starting point for "early Stones".

Album wise, if we have to stick to three, I would reccomend Sticky Fingers, Some Girls, and Tattoo You. All three contain hits you are probably familiar with in addition to worthy album tracks.

Exile On Main St. is the top of the heap, but don't start there. Digest a few before getting to that one.

In terms of official live albums, Get Yer Ya Ya's Out is the only on that is absolutely essential.

But if the issue is to tell what The Stones "are about" you need to give a proper answer that includes also an example of their music from their elder yaers... (not just from, say 1968 to 1972). Probably BRIDGES TO BABYLON is the best album to represent their last 20 yaers of 'existence'.

But yeah, I could live without BRIDGES...

played a bunch of records for a novice friend of mine. His favorite was...Collectibles, the limited edition b-side disc that was sold as part of the Flashpoint package.

Go figure.

LOL I figured since there was no new studio album since the last time they asked this question a year ago (unless you count the Some Girls bonus disc) that the suggestions last April would still work for them. smileys with beergrinning smiley

Re: Recommend me three Stones albums

Some may disagree, of course, but for me essential Stones albums (must haves) are:

Albums
The Rolling Stones, Now! (strictly a US release)
Out Of Our Heads (I like the US one better for some reason)
Aftermath (UK edition)
Beggars Banquet
Let It Bleed
Sticky Fingers
Exile On Main Street
Goats Head Soup
It's Only Rock'N'Roll
Black And Blue
Some Girls
Emotional Rescue
Tattoo You
Undercover

Compilations/live releases
Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! - excellent 'live' album
Hot Rocks
More Hot Rocks
Sucking In The Seventies

Albums To Not Bother With
Dirty Work
Voodoo Lounge
