Keith's Best Solo Vocal Performance
Posted by: flilflam ()

I have never been a big fan of Keith's solo vocals. His voice is raspy, weak, and strained. But sometimes a raspy and strained voice is perfect for a song, such as the classic, The Nearness of You, by Hoagy Carmichael. I have listened to it many times and can find no fault with any of it. His guitar work is minimalistic, melodic, and perfect for the lyrics. The back up singing is wonderful, and Ronnie is great in a back up guitar role.

If anyone can think of a song he has performed better, I would like to find out what that song is.

In what way? He sang very nice in Roskilde. Did he miss some cues again? smiling smiley

He missed every cue EXCEPT the opening 3 lines I think!!! The band and HE were exchanging glances for about 4 minutes....."what are we doing?" sort of stuff...he kept looking at the teleprompter and ignoring it.......absolute shambles. Of course, being Keith, I forgive him......just!

grinning smiley Can't wait for the video

He glanced quite a bit at the prompter in Roskilde as well, but he even controlled when the band should get into the bridge, so I'd say he had it down here.

Yeah, that's a good one, treacle. Sort of the advanced sequel to All About You...

Well as has been noted his vocal is pretty thin, but at the lower register there is a sweet spot for sure.

Really suits his older voice to sing at that lower key and sound is great.

IMHO his best performance is The Worst. I adore his performance in Miami 1994 (DVD). The Raspiness and sweetness of his tone together with his minimalistic range (a positive attribute) perfectly complement the lyrics and melody

HAPPY - Exile On Mainstreet
BEFORE THEY MAKE ME RUN - Some Girls
YOU GOT THE SILVER - Let It Bleed
MEMORY MOTEL - Black and Blue
COMING DOWN AGAIN - Goat's Head Soup
WE HAD IT ALL - Bootleg version, not the version of Some Girls DeLuxe
MAKE NO MISTAKE - Talk Is Cheap
ALL ABOUT YOU - Emotional Rescue
LITTLE T&A - TATTOO YOU
THE WORST - VOODOO LOUNGE
The acoustic Keith CD that came with VOODOO BREW.
SLIPPING AWAY - Steel Wheels and Stripped/Live
LEARNING THE GAME- The Biggest Bang DVD
TAKE IT SO HARD - Talk is Cheap
That Kind Of Fool - KR with Jerry Lee Lewis album Last Man Standing
YOU WIN AGAIN - Hank Williams tribute album
LOVE HURTS (+ Norah Jones) - Tribute to Gram Parsons DVD

There are so many others.

Some of The Worst:
Wanna Hold You - Under Cover and live, horrible song.
Can't Be Seen - Steel Wheels and live, horrible song. A Talk is Cheap leftover.

There are a few that are outstanding -

How Can I Stop
Thief In The Night
All About You
Coming Down Again
You Got The Silver

Live (from the live albums anyway) I would have to go with The Nearness Of You and Thief In The Night.

Solo albums...

Demon
Locked Away
Runnin' Too Deep
Words Of Wonder
Take It So Hard
How I Wish

Doesn't "solo" mean Keith's work outside the Stones?
Or are we being asked about his performances as a lead vocalist in general?

I can't pick a favourite among Keith's amazing vocals - maybe the time in Vienna when you could feel his singing on your skin.
This Place Is Empty - and he filled the whole stadium with his voice.

Whoever up there said Wanna Hold You is a crap song should check out the so-called Honeymoon Tapes -
with just Keith and an open-g acoustic guitar, that number sounds the way it was supposed to sound: strong and wild!

Yeah, Memory Motel doesn't count since it's not a lead vocal by Keith.

As a lead vocalist.

The studio version of "Demon".
A hugely under-rated tune imo.
