Well, live, I wouldn't classify it or pigeon-hole it as any of those things. He's more "rock" than you might imagine, but he's also so talented that he seems to get bored at the limitations of frat-band/guitar-band simple chording. Prince live is simply "good music." And it's also more guitar-centric than you might anticipate. Prince is an A+ guitarist. He knows how to play, nuff said. See the R&R HOF While My Guitar Gently Weeps performance for an example of how this guy can simply blow people away on a whim with no rehearsal, and seemingly in his sleep.

Some people left before the show was over. He did 5 encores.

I think it's a hybrid of soul, funk, rock, r & b, r n b, blues, hip hop, jazz and blues. I'd even throw in a little country here and there too. No two Prince albums are the same. And, come to think of it, no two Prince gigs are ever the same either.

Holy Christ!

ditto!

The man is unbelievable. I once saw him do an after-show gig at the Astoria in London, which must have started around 3.30 a.m. - a good four hours after he'd come offstage after a 150-minute marathon at Wembley Arena.

I saw that one too. Blinding. Did you ever catch any of the 1998 UK tour? I saw him at Brixton Academy and it was another jaw-dropper. I've never seen a bad Prince gig, let alone a mediocre one.

No, I'm afraid I missed those. Was he doing 'the hits'? In '95 at Wembley there was a lot of muttering in the audience (and a fair few walkouts) because the set was so funk-heavy. It seemed like a make-or-break tour at the time, what with all the 'SLAVE' stuff. Funny to think back on it now...

He was doing the hits, but mixing in covers and stuff from Emancipation and New Power Soul. More half n half.

The '95 shows were in the 'slave' era, where he was playing the whole of The Gold Experience, plus Days of Wild, because WB wouldn't release the album. Angry shows, with some blistering performances. The trouble was, the bulk of the material was unreleased. I got hold of a tape of the first show and so I was on nodding terms with the songs the next time I saw him. He got the women in the audience to sing the chorus to 'pussy control'. The aftershow was a far warmer performance, but they're always completely different to the main gigs.

I remember Mayte diving into the audience, who seemed very reluctant to give her back.

Good on Prince for again doing the unexpected and wowing the fans. No one in their right mind is now going to be leaving any of his shows in a hurry. But he probably will only do this kind of encore on certain nights - just like he only turned up at some of the aftershows at O2 Indigo. The four I was lucky to catch were AMAZING and every one different. Waaaaaaay better than any of the main shows I saw.

It will certainly make it more difficult for the security to clear out the building after a show if everyone waits around hoping for more. Prince made them wait 15 minutes the other night. I imagine fans will want to stick around for at least 30 minutes before leaving to make sure they don't miss anything, which will be a pain for security and building people.

I saw Prince in the Netherlands last November. Tickets were 80 Euro, but if you arrived early, you could make front of stage. The man played for almost three hours, and threw his Tele in the audience twice. First time I almost died, but the second time I got a bit suspicious. I mean, we were a nice crowd, but giving away two (identical) Tele's is a bit too much. But does he really throws a guitar in the audience, only to ask it back? Kinda lame, is it not? The show was awesome, daar niet van...
