Ron Wood - Slidin' Onward....His Best Moment on LYL?
Posted by: Munichhilton ()

I was throwing away old mags and found this.
Nothing groundbreaking but thought some would like it here.

Since the article points it out as one of his 'great recording moments' what in your opinion is Ronnie's best moment on Love You Live?

His solo on" You can't always get what you want" sounds pretty good to me. Ron seems quite confident when he launches it, he hits those first notes with assurance. His tone is crisp and thick and he does some good work with his left hand. I like the melody and the tremolo part where he goes crazy on his pick.
I can still picture Ronnie playing that solo with a cigarette dangling from his lips. Yeah, that's my favorite Ron's moment on Love you Live.

That's a good one

I hate to be typical, but I love the double slide guitar attack on Little Red Rooster and both all the weaving on Crackin' Up. Those are Love You Live highlights to me...Ron Keith Mick any of em.

On LYL? I will leave out Side 3 because it is lightyears better than any of the rest IMO.
But I like the ending of Side 1; LOVE "Hot Stuff" and "@#$%&" too.
YCAGWYW I don't like the solo very much; well, actually I like the beginning and the end. he starts it with a fat sound, and very assured. And the end has that suck-pull sound which I love too. But the solo is dominated by the flutter picking section; it is the climax. And I just don't like that section.
Tumbling Dice...this might be the only boring version of TD ever recorded.

The original solo on YCAGWYW (on LYL it is edited), the solo on "Hot Stuff"; the boring track on "Black and Blue" is great as live version ...

Only Side 3.

Ronnie's slide playing on Little Red Rooster is soulful and beautiful, imo.

The best solo on LYL must be Hot Stuff. It's even better than Mandel's playing on the album.

If You Can't Rock Me and YCAGWYW deserve a mention, too.

Only side 3? Personally, I enjoy Fingerprint File (with great bass from Wood), Star Star, IORR, HTW, You Gotta Move and the songs mentioned above very much.

Well, we've discusses LYL before. You enjoy it. I think it's lifeless and sloppy - the worst Stones live period before and after some really good tours. Except for side three, where they really sparkle, it's unlistenable.

The Mocambo side, his solo on YCAGWYW is terrible, one of the worst solos ever.

No, Wood played it live. Wyman played synth. Taylor played bass on the studio version.

No.As far as bad guitar solos go on a Rolling Stones record, the SFTD one, on Shine A Light is the worst. I understand that some don't like Ron's solo on LYL but to say that it is horrible isn't fair at all.

Think Ronnie's best moments on LYL are tracks on side 3, especially on "Creckin Up"......but I love his quick licks/solos all over Brown Sugar as well......

He had far better moments on the 1975 tour - especially on the unedited YCAGWYW versions from that year.... The great guitar-duelling on for instance Gimme Shelter in Buffalo June 15th are also something that blows LYL away - also when thinking just about Wood's parts, and not the entire band

Thanks for posting that article....Munichhilton....haven't seen it before

Well, we've talked about it before: Even if they had used more '75 recordings LYL would have been better. My personal opinion is that there was a missed opportunity for a classic Stones album. If they simply issued a single live album all taken from El Mocambo and focusing on covers and lesser-known songs (as side 3 of LYL did) we might have had an album that represented that version of the band as well as Ya Yas did the '69 version. To load it up with half-hearted versions of SFTD and JJF was a big mistake, imo. The record has not aged well.

Yeah, the Crackin' Up-licks are indeed funky and mean. But many of them are absent on the El Mocambo-boot, as they are overdubs.

A live lbum after 75/76 tour pretty much had to be a grand affair; it was the times - right before Punk hit; and they were introducing Ron as a Stone.
In retro a complete Mocambo album would have been so much better, and lasting.

Well, we haven't heard the whole Mocambo gig yet. Some of the other songs were great (Dance Little Sister), but there are a few lame songs in there as well. It just might be that the shows weren't that good and consistent to make that Mocambo-album?

Maybe, but given the quality of the four songs they got they probably would have been able to find another five or six songs from the shows.

as with the mocambo tracks that made lyl....with the correct amount of over-dubbing, they all coulda been great....

Tumbling Dice...this might be the only boring version of TD ever recorded.

Ive always had a soft spot for This version of TD. It may be that it was the first live version I heard from back in the day, before the vegas era. It's funky and rough around the edges. the way mick sings it is such a departure from the album, that really blew me away. The organ from billly gives it a reggea feel. Had I been introduced to a '72 tour version first maybe I'd feel different, I don't know. But to this day it still sounds pretty damn good to me. Am I the only one who likes this version?

You might be. There are a few other LYL-lovers here though that are kindred spirits.

No doubt The bootlegs from 75 are better but I think LYL is a gas. A big criticism is Mick's singing, I think it captures him at an interesting point in the evolution of his voice.
