This is a really great question since open G tuning is one of the most popular banjo tunings out there.

Agreed; great question. Ronnie has played mandolin on a song about mandolins, i.e Mandolin Wind; in fact he co-wrote that one with Rod Stewart. Rod has played banjo a few times.

the mandolin was played by the mandolin player in Lindisfarne
