The only Jeff Beck album I have listened to is Blow by Blow, which is really good IMHO. Sounds like I should try listening to some of his other albums. Maybe his official bootlegs? Any suggestions?

I personally love the ''Live at Ronnie Scotts''DVD and ''Rock'n Roll Party with Imelda May Band'' DVD. Both are the latest stuff he has out but so many good albums from the past years going back to the early days after The Yardbirds. The Jeff Beck Band when Ronnie Wood played bass,Mickey Waller drums and Rod Stewart vocals was good. smoking smiley

This is more than just using a whammy bar.
He's playing complete melodies with it.

While I appreciate his obvious talent, Beck is overrated IMHO. His melodies are too angular for me and his tone grates.

doesn't sound like there's anything wrong with his rating, just sounds like your tastes vary from his style....

Anyone who can find melodies in Beck's technical drivel to music is really to congratulate ... to you who doubt of ECs abilities... dig up his live album "Just One Night" from 1980 and enjoy the authentic blues feeling and his outstanding guitar playing .. .and to you who fell asleep during that session...>grinning smiley<

Beck is quite inventive and does some things on a guitar that EC does not do outside of certain blues scales. Beck is a phenominal player pushing 70 years old. I do think EC has better hair.

JB has better hair paint, though

Saw JB last week and he was still playing some mighty stuff. He's still my fave out of the three Yardbirds alums, probably because he changes often and has the skill to do so.

Did the show allow point-n-shoot cameras ?

find melodies??? he played the damn vocal parts of "a day in the life", "nessun dorma", "immigrant song" and many others on the guitar and it sounded just like the actual vocal. well no words of course. so i guess none of those songs have melody in the vocal line

You don't think so? confused smiley Who did Mick Jagger call for the guitar-jobb on that Rock'n'Roll Circus Show from 1968? Beck?
smoking smiley

I like the mid/late 60s Clapton more than Beck myself, but in all fairness - Mick DID call Beck numerous times. After all, Beck played on his first two studio albums. Mick wanted Beck on the 87/88 tours as well, but Beck turned him down, supposedly due to Mick being tight with money.

Well, I'll decide this Saturday when I see Jeff Beck for the 1st time.
Seen Clapton many times, will be interesting to see how Jeff compares.

But, I'm really expecting it to be closer to the Joe Bonamassa show I saw about a month ago, more than any of Eric Clapton's last few tours.
I expect more true fans of the guitar and it's music, and less aging suburbanites that only want to get drunk and hear Cocaine.

Should be good either way.

strider - if you're expecting a typical beck show, be forewarned...he's playing with a large ensemble as a tribute to les paul. he's not playing as the band leader you'd normally see him.

there are ALOT of folks not paying attention to the press releases and marquee's for these beck shows and alot of beck fans are outraged. i know - my daughter works the theater here where he recently played and told me alot of folks were upset and left early.

On the other side of the coin, there are rock 'n roll fans who are not sure what to expect from Jeff...................and Jeff Beck fans who are not realy rock 'n roll fans.................... both are so glad they went to the gig and getting what they hoped for...........Superb guitar playing,a great band, and a great night out. smoking smiley

His Les Paul Tribute shows ended April 9th.
His next tour starts April 13th, with his band.

This is from his own blog;

My Rock ‘n’ Roll Tour ended on Saturday night in San Francisco at The Fillmore.
What a great way to end this tour. I have a blast doing these shows, but not only that, this was something I wanted to do for Les.

So now I am on my way to Salt Lake City to meet with my band and have a day or rehearsals before starting our tour and I can’t wait! We haven’t played since December and I am looking forward to being back on the road with them............

I sling guitar with this cat!

You'll be amazed.

Check out this guy, I would like to see him perform with Jeff.
He's playing a bit Indian raga style with slide. They would make a great couple imo, as
Jeff creates a similar atmosphere with his whammy bar.

Go directly to "There and Back" from 1980. You'll dig it, particularly "Star Cycle," the first track. Smokes!

Saw Jeff Beck last night, front row center.

Fabulous show! Incredible talent.

I always hear a lot of people say that you have to see Bob Dylan at least once in your life, even though his voice is gone, he doesn't play his hits, etc... but,

I would have to say the same of Jeff Beck, but all of his skills are still intact.

I first saw Jeff live in an amphitheatre right next to Universal studios in LA about 15-20 years ago.I was on holiday and didn't even know he was touring at the time.I thought,''I gotta see JB play at least once in my life''.Saw the gig but though impressed with his guitar playing and good band, didn't have a lasting impression on me.Think it was a boring (to me anyway) phase in music he was in at the time.Next time live were 2 gigs at Royal Albert Hall,London, end of last October.Blew me away especially second night where I was 3rd row.Great band and small orchestra, great guest singers, great songs and mind blowing guitar playing from Jeff. Then again recently end of January when he played The Killing Cancer gig at Hammersmith. These last 3 shows I will remember for ever.I reckon he as at the top of his game now. smoking smiley>grinning smiley<smoking smiley

Derek Trucks, nephew of Butch Trucks, who is original and current drummer for Allman Brothers Band. Derek starting playing with the Allman Brothers at age 12.

Early in 2006, Eric Clapton initially called Trucks to arrange a recording session with him for a proposed album with JJ Cale. Although Trucks had met and played with a pantheon of rock and blues' elite, this was Trucks' first occasion to meet Eric Clapton. While working in the studio together on The Road to Escondido, Clapton found a quick compatibility, and invited The Derek Trucks Band to open for him during his upcoming 2007 Crossroads Guitar Festival in Toyota Park, Bridgeview, Illinois on July 28, 2007. Derek's wife, vocalist Susan Tedeschi sang with the band, who additionally provided backing support for rock guitarist Johnny Winter's set at the festival. Afterward, Trucks remained with Clapton as his accompanist on guitar during his set within his house band, and after, continued with him during his world tour afterward. Although Trucks was elated, he mentioned some concerns he had regarding his responsibilities with The Allman Brothers Band (Gregg Allman in particular), but his worries were unfounded. Commenting afterward, in 2007, he said, "The Allman Brothers Band has been really great this past year working around Clapton's schedule. I'm really grateful. They understood it was something I couldn't pass up".[6]

In another interview, speaking of performing with Clapton, Trucks said, "He asked me that [to tour] out of the blue". I think he was just looking for a new guitar foil to play off," continuing, "I was weaned on Derek and the Dominos [...] I experienced a moment of realization that I was in Clapton's actual band one night during "Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad", when I looked over and saw him there playing!"[16] As a result, in 2006, Trucks found himself playing in three bands in 17 countries.[6]

Derek is one not to be missed. One of the best slide guitar players I've ever heard.
