It's time for a hillbilly moment!

I'm reading this book on Jimi, and they talk sometimes of his country influences, and him playing country licks. And Miles Davis thought he was a hillbilly from the key signature or something like that. What sort of music is this country/hillbilly, and where can I get started on it? I've only got Gram Parson's GP (which I love), but am unsure how to go a bit deeper into the genre. I know Dead Flowers and Sweet Virginia were inspired by Gram.

The Bear Family series - Country & Western Hit Parade 1945 - 1960
is a great place to start .... They cover alotta the hits with amazing
liner notes ... photos and info....Great sound quality

If ya wanna go deeper try and find the Bear Family 7 CD set
A Shot In The Dark - Tennessee Jive
Country Music on Nashvilles Independent Labels 1945-1955
Once again the presentation is top-notch and the liner notes stunning.
Sound quality is best you'll find for these very rare recordings ......
Covers labels such as Bullet --- Tennessee --- Republic ---Mecca --- Speed --- Gold --- Hickory --- Jamboree

The two Starday CD's on the ACE label

Also try the El-Toro - Collector's Choice 6 CD series rare stuff

Buffalo Bop --- Collector Records --- Cactus
Too much ta list --- TONS of RARE hillbilly stuff released on CD from collectors own private collections .....

Good Luck this should keep ya going for awhile ......

I think "Hillbilly" music is a loose term for Classic Country/Bluegrass kinda music.

Here's what I think of as Hillbilly and BTW, these guys performed the theme music for the Beverly Hillbillies TV series.

Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs, ya'll !

Seven-year-old Ricky Scaggs getting some training here:

Check out the rifle mounted over the fireplace.
I remember seeing a lot of this in homes as a young boy. Not so much anymore, though.

Since posting this thread months (thanks for all the suggestions guys thumbs up) I also found this 5 volume compilation, called Heroes of Country Music, from Rhino Records. [www.amazon.com] How is that it's always Rhino that put out these great boxsets?

I haven't got it yet but it seems a nice way to get into country music.

'Awake, My Soul' is the first feature documentary about the Sacred Harp singers,
a 'Lost Tonal Tribe' who, in the deep south, continue to sing some of the oldest
songs in America. Directed by Matt and Erica Hinton.

Havent seen the movie, but if you can find some early recordings of sacred harp
music (which has nothing to do with harps), go for it. The best white tribal
sounds you ever heard...

Hillbilly probably came from the Appalachian music played by the country folk who lived in the hills outside of the major southern towns. Certainly a southern USA concept. I spent time in the ozarks of Missouri and Arkansas and saw plenty of back woods banjo/guitar sometimes mandolin porch jams, so the Ozark hills are hillbilly too. Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys always seemed to fit the hillbilly description , Bluegrass is definately hillbilly music. check it out. peace.
