I'm reading this book on Jimi, and they talk sometimes of his country influences, and him playing country licks. And Miles Davis thought he was a hillbilly from the key signature or something like that. What sort of music is this country/hillbilly, and where can I get started on it? I've only got Gram Parson's GP (which I love), but am unsure how to go a bit deeper into the genre. I know Dead Flowers and Sweet Virginia were inspired by Gram.

I think "Hillbilly" music is a loose term for Classic Country/Bluegrass kinda music.

Here's what I think of as Hillbilly and BTW, these guys performed the theme music for the Beverly Hillbillies TV series.

Since posting this thread months (thanks for all the suggestions guys ) I also found this 5 volume compilation, called Heroes of Country Music, from Rhino Records. [www.amazon.com] How is that it's always Rhino that put out these great boxsets?

I haven't got it yet but it seems a nice way to get into country music.

jimmie rodgers, hank snow, bob wills...and so on and so forth...there's a lifetime supply of good old timey music out there...

'Awake, My Soul' is the first feature documentary about the Sacred Harp singers,
a 'Lost Tonal Tribe' who, in the deep south, continue to sing some of the oldest
songs in America. Directed by Matt and Erica Hinton.

Havent seen the movie, but if you can find some early recordings of sacred harp
music (which has nothing to do with harps), go for it. The best white tribal
sounds you ever heard...

Hillbilly probably came from the Appalachian music played by the country folk who lived in the hills outside of the major southern towns. Certainly a southern USA concept. I spent time in the ozarks of Missouri and Arkansas and saw plenty of back woods banjo/guitar sometimes mandolin porch jams, so the Ozark hills are hillbilly too. Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys always seemed to fit the hillbilly description , Bluegrass is definately hillbilly music. check it out. peace.
