Make a setlist with just a couple of warhorses
Posted by: TimeIs ()

Also: something realistic, i.e. that doesn't include too obscure tunes.

Off the top of my head:

One Hit (to the Body) (great intro, slow build-up à la Gimme Shelter)
If You Can’t Rock Me
She Was Hot
Just My Imagination
Doom and Gloom
Worried about You
She’s a Rainbow
Down the Road Apiece
She’s So Cold
Rocks Off
Too Rude (Keith)
Little T&A (Keith)
Let It Bleed
Can’t You Hear Me Knocking
Stray Cat Blues
Monkey Man
Out of Control
Star Star
Rip This Joint
Street Fighting Man
——
Brown Sugar

1.- Out Of Control
2.- If You Can't Rock Me
3.- Get Off My Cloud
4.- Satisfaction
5.- Out Of Tears
6.- Country Honk
7.- Sweet Virginia
8.- This Place Is Empty
9.- Learning The Game
10.- Can't You Hear Me Knocking
11.- One More Shot
12.- Dance pt. 1
13.- That's How Strong My Love Is
14.- Gimme Shelter
15.- Tumbling Dice
16.- Brown Sugar
17.- Jumping Jack Flash

Encore:
18.- Midnight Rambler
19.- Can't Turn You Loose

Killer set that touches lots of albums, singles, new stuff, old stuff, covers, rock, country, soul etc. etc.
All in the span of a 19 song set. With the exception of Out Of Tears, which was last played in 1995, and Country Honk, which was never done live except for a snippet at Knebworth in 1976, all the others have been played in the last 11 years. Seems doable. I'll never get enough of watching that version of ICTYL from Cirkus Krone Bau, 2003. That's a true showstopper.

Doom and Gloom
IORR
Wild Horses
It Won't Take Long

Little L&A - Keith
Miss You
Street Fighting Man (Mick Taylor)
Ventilator Blues (MT)
Can't You Hear Me Knocking (MT)
Love is Strong
Honky Tonky Women

Brown Sugar
Gimme Shelter (without Lisa's part)
Saint Of Me
Angie (With Mick Taylor doing his Brussels '73 solo)
Rough Justice (Slow and powerful like on studio album, not fast and pointless like on ABB-tour)
Monkey Man
Loving Cup
Plundred My Soul
Mercy Mercy
All About You
Can't Be Seen
Start Me Up (Here we go!)
Look What The Cat Dragged In
That's How Strong My Love Is
Out Of Tears
Neighbours
She's So Cold
Paint It Black

ENCORE

Following The River
Hand Of Fate

Song vote would be the slot after Keith's set with well known warhorses so the casual facebook fans would fight about which one to play:

Example:

Song vote for Perth 2014:
Jumping Jack Flash
Honky Tonk Women
Start Me Up
Tumbling Dice
Satisfaction

Good lists, but almost everyone is including too many warhorses. The thread idea was to come with a couple (1 or 2 - I had one).

These are the obvious war horses (12):
Satisfaction
JJF
Brown Sugar
YCAGWYW
Sympathy
Gimme Shelter
Start Me Up
Miss You
Tumbling Dice
Midnight Rambler
IORR
Honky Tonk Women

And maybe the not so obvious:
Wild Horses
Angie
Paint It Black

SFM doesn't get played enough so that I would quality it as a war horse (considering last several tours), even though it's a classic on part with the other top "stallions".

All Quiet On The Wasted Front....

....But, seriously, why are there so many here who can't stand enjoying their greatest hits?

These songs that people complain about, they were hits for a reason--they are their best work. Why would they play a concert showcasing only their substandard fillers and B-sides?

Think of it this way: If you had a friend who was interested in discovering their music, would you hand them Hot Rocks.... or Dirty Work and Black and Blue?

How did you first discover the Stones? Because you heard Jack Flash or Brown Sugar on the radio, not because you heard track 4 of Black and Blue or track 8 of Goats Head Soup.

Right on.

Seems like this forum attracts the "track 4 of Black and Blue" type.

I think Mick took requests from the general public not that long ago and basically rejected the idea because of all of the filler requests and Mick said that the MOST of the audience goes along to hear songs they know which are the well known ones no one needs to mention.

The people that are most active with requests on forums or facebook or whatever, are not necessarily the majority of the greater public.

Track 5 off GHS - literally the first Stones I heard in 1973 - love Black and Blue to this day - fantastic album.
Seriously though, the parameters of your question aren't really fair because I think just about everyone, excepts even if they do like it a bit, DW is the bottom of the barrel and B&B is the shortest, but if I were to recommend.....definitely Memory Motel over Ruby Tuesday

I don't think it's people not enjoying the greatest hits but more of wanting a little bit of variety. I like chicken, but I wouldn't eat it everyday. Taking your Hot Rocks example, there are songs on there -- greatest hits, as you sad -- that they ignore. I think the rub for many fans is they have so many hits but focus on the same ones over and over again. Where's Play With Fire, Heart Of Stone, Time Is On My Side, etc.?

If I had a friend interested in getting into the Stones I would give them Sticky Fingers. I don't think the only thing they would talk about is Brown Sugar and Wild Horses.

Nobody should ever hear Dirty Work, by the way! It would be the last album I ever played for someone and then it would only be One Hit and Sleep Tonight.

Why prove something obvious? Anyway, it's to late to change anything now. The setlist is going to look the same during this "14 On Fire" tour. Two alterations per gig. That's it.
And I do think this is their last tour. Maybe a handful of American gigs in 2015. Or maybe not...
