Should Mick Jagger record a Soul/ R&B cover album ?
Posted by: kowalski ()

I've been listening to the concert from the Olympia in 2003 where the Stones cover a lot of old soul / R&B classics such as Everybody Needs Somebody To Love, That's How Strong My Love Is, Love Train, Going To A Go Go... Jagger is so much into it when he sings this kind of songs... It most likely won't happen any time soon but a cover album with his favorites songs would be a great thing to listen to I think.

He did a good one in the 80s with the Red Devils, though..

Yeah, and come to to think of it, he out Keith-ed Keith with that one, in terms of getting back to the roots.

It was a blues covers album though... I was more thinking of soul/R&B oriented album.

Keith wrote his own material, though. I think TIC is the better one, although the Mick album is very good.

A retro album à la Amy Winehouse would be a no-no for Mick (as he hates everything that has "going back to" written on it). It would have to be a Soul record with a contemporary sound.

Not easy to achieve that, and how? With drum machines and samples? Soul purists would scream "heresy!" >grinning smiley<

This. Why name songs he has already recorded and say it would be great if he would do an album of them? For the reason you say, it's the last thing he would want to do.

Open the vaults.

Yes.

Actually, just another album with amazing cuts like on Wandering Spirit would suffice.

No. Mick Hucknall already did that.

A release the Red Devils album should have happened long ago, though.

Well, if it needs to be a cover album, I'd love to Mick go for the genres he for the very last time really was inspired. That is, go back to late 70's in New York, and do his versions of disco and punk hits at the time.... Wasn't he also doing something similar in spirit with Scorsese also? I have always find it fascinating - even though first odd - that Jagger was able to dig both of those genres, which seemed to contradict each other so much. There is not many like him, but knowing where he did come from, being fascinated by black music and its trends for a long time, and also belonging to the generation that was hitted initially by rock and roll big time, and later being the frontman and voice of the world' most rebellious and dangerous sounding band, for him seeing both of new trends easy to get along with was rather natural. Keith was also consistent by hating both of them equally...grinning smiley

So what about a disco version of "Anarchy In The UK", and a punk reading of "YMCA"?

It would be a lot more interesting and listenable than Pooper heave. Could be quite fun and a nice way to share his passion for some fantastic music. And a lot less pedestrian than the American Songbook crappolla that Rod the Sod has been chained to lately.

I don't believe Mick would like to do that because he doesn't need to do "just" covers. It made Rod Stewart a lot of money as well as a strange career move from 2002-2010 but I don't think Mick is yet in that position in 2014.
Rock and roll,

I love Soul and R&B stuff. Check out Eddie Floyd in Norway 1967

This is is a religious experience. It would be better if it was a Stones album instead of a Mick album though. Ronnie has done a couple of excellent covers. "If You Gotta Make A Fool" & also "Chain Of Fools" to name a couple. I also think a Classic Country cover album would be great as well.

If and or when they do open the vaults again they should just either leave the songs as is or if they have to add new stuff to the songs then release it as a "new" album like they did with Tattoo You.

He already has done. England's Newest Hitmakers, 12x5, The Rolling Stones Now!, Out of Our Heads, December's Children all come to mind.
