I was reading this right now. He was a great actor, indeed.

Found dead "with a hypodermic needle still in his arm"

Brrrr.... sad!

So sad news. One of those actors who really have made a difference in Hollywood movies.

This is extremely sad news. Phillip hailed from my hometown of Rochester, NY. He was a truly gifted actor. My prayers go out to his family.

Very sad...

The bizarre thing is that it's been reported that there were two 'hoaxes' surrounding his death in January, the latest reported Jan. 31 and refuted Feb. 1.

Very strange stuff.

That is messed up.

At least he was graced with an Oscar before leaving us, because he certainly deserved one.

At first I thought this could be a hoax, because I read some of these reports, too. But unfortunately, there's a lot of newspapers reporting the death, so I think it's true. And a journalist just posted this photograph, taken in front of Philip's apartment:

Aweful news.
Great, great actor. Even in lesser films his acting was outstanding.
I saw him for the first time in Magnolia and I became a fan instantly.

Much too young. R.I.P.

Great actor indeed.
Loved his acting in "Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead" and "Radio Rock Revolution"
My guess: he couldn't stand society's superficiality no more.

Hope for him that quality is higher where he is now

One of the best. He never came off as phony or just "acting". Not a pretty boy.....too bad it came to this. Drugs are not a joke. Heroin is not a joke. Serious drug dealers would get the death penalty if I were the judge

I saw this film a lot of times, and I always loved this scene:

Oh my God, this is just awful news. Such an incredible talent. I am stunned and heartbroken.

Hoffman was absolutely brilliant in such a wide variety of roles. Here's one of my personal favorites.

Rest in peace, Philip.

A great man gone. Watched 'New York, Synecdoche' a while back and thought about what a brilliant actor PSH was.

'Capote'. 'The Big Lebowski'. 'The Talented Mr. Riply'. And so on.
