Musicians we lost in 2013

Chrissy Amphlett
The Divinyls singer passed away after battling breast cancer and multiple sclerosis.

Mac Curtis, rockabilly legend died after a horrible car crash...





Arash Farazmand, Soroush Farazmand, and Ali Eskandarian - founding members of Iranian indie band the Yellow Dogs, were tragically shot and killed in their Brooklyn apartment on November 11 by fellow musician Ali Akbar Mohammadi Rafe. - Rafe took his own life on the building's roof.





Pogues guitarist and Irish punk icon Phil Chevron died from an inoperable tumor following several years of struggles with cancer on October 8th. He was 56.





Cedric Brooks
The Jamaican-born saxophonist, solo artist and famous for his playing in the reggae band The Burning Spear





Jazz legend Donald Byrd had played with likes of John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, and Thelonious Monk and many others...





JJ Cale





Chi Cheng - The Deftones bassist, who had been in a coma since sustaining injuries in a 2008 car accident, passed away. He was just 42-years-old.





Richie Havens





Rick Huxley
The bass player for British Invasion pop stars and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees the Dave Clark Five died on February 11. Huxley had battled for years with emphysema.

Lets not forget:

Andy Johns a producer and engineer whose credits included Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti and the Rolling Stones' Exile on Main Street, died on April 7th after visiting the hospital with a stomach ulcer. He was 62.





George Jones
The country legend, whose hard living mirrored his bittersweet lyrics, died from complications related to fever and irregular blood pressure on April 26th. Jones passed away at the age of 81.





Shadow Morton died, he was the producer and songwriter for Shangri Las and he produced the New York Dolls album Too Much Too Soon

Ray Manzarek of The Doors





Reggae legend Junior Murvin died of diabetes




Country singer Mindy McCready commited suicide this year.
She was found dead from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.
She was 37. It didn't come as suprise but it's sad, indeed...





Allen Lanier — a co-founding member of Blue Öyster Cult who also contributed to vital punk records by Patti Smith and the Clash — died on August 14th. Lanier, who was 67, succumbed to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.





Alvin Lee of Ten Years After died from complications during a surgical procedure on March 6th. He was 68.





Lead singer of the Troggs died this year too:





Folkish balladeer Jason Molina struggled with mental health issues and he drank himself to death:

Well, it's just that all the great artists I admire come from the 20th century, and they're all dying in the 21st century, which makes this century a bit of a downer, bit by bit, year by year, a little less like the century I know and come from the further on it goes.

Other than that, everything's great. There's a stack of CDs ready to play, a pile of DVDs, and plenty of beer in the fridge.

Now if only all my favorite people would just stop dying....

Very sad thread indeed...but it's life. Makes me wonder in light of the flurry of aging musicians/rock bands touring and re-issuing some of their back catalogue of music, they might be feeling their own mortality. Just a bit...not quite a swan song, yet..hopefully!smiling smiley
