...especially when they're not too far off from the studio version.(by the way...is this one really from 1977,,,seems a bit early)

StartMeUp

Do you have any favourites? Can anyone recommend the best boots for alternate takes out there?
Thanks in advance!

This version is from 1978 (Some Girls sessions). It will be released only 3 years later though. Quite amazing as it's already in its final form...

If you're interested in alternate takes from this period I recommend you "All Inside Our Crazy Dreams" (DAC-021)

Tattoo Too Cd is a better choice for tattoo you outtakes.

Well I haven't listened to this one but generally I tend to prefer Dog N Cat releases over Rattle Snake ones. Better and more natural sound imo.

I didn't know they play this Chuck Willis' tune. Great version. The Band also has a fantastic cover of it in Moondog Matinee (it's one of the bonus tracks).

I'm currently downloading Tattoo Too (Rattlesnake) from Hungercity in FLAC and files appear to be from lossy sources. Trader's Little Helper says so and the spectral frequency is typical of mp3 files. Did anyone else notice this already?

Yes
Disagree with you when it comes to Rattlesnake vs. DAC, but the Tattoo You sessions is an exception.

Well it's not the first I find a Rattlesnake compilation made from lossy sources then. Last one was "Lost Legal Live Tracks" which is made for most of it from lossy sources.

No not the first time. But they gave us some great releases through the years, and their way of EQing are nearly always for the better.

After listening to Start Me Up on both releases (RS and DAC) I still prefer the DAC sound. Less aggressive I'd say.
Plus DAC comp is not from lossy sources.
Definitely recommend All Inside Our Crazy Dreams. smiling smiley

I didn´t prefer Tattoo too because of sound quality, but as it has lots of outtake songs from Tattoo you.

DAC does nice EQíng...lot better what VGP did, however, sometimes i found DAC to be recorded to LOUD,which increases HISS,specially in the old recordings.

All inside our grazy dreams was originally 2 LP vinyl bootleg,i still got it,maybe i should rip it onto cdr and share it.?

That would be very nice! smiling smiley

I agree that DAC sound is often too loud.

"I found DAC to be recorded too LOUD"

That's the problem with Japanese bootleggers; at the Mastering stage they tend to amplify the music to make it sound more powerful. DAC/VGP is not the worst btw. What Tarantura did with the string of lovely "Mr. Peach" tapes is simply dreadful... confused smiley

YEP,again,if they would use analog EQuing(like i do),usually when i remaster older tapes/recordings.I allways test how it sounds.with hiss or without it.Sometimes music doesn´t suffer if i take it all away, sometimes it does suffer.

And thats what bootleggers should do,take all the hiss OFF if you want to keep a loud recording.

Good old vinyl bootlegs never had this problem.

The early version of start me up made it´s debut on Tattoo Too. All all other boots used this version as source.

Technically this isn't an alternate take - it's the master take that they went back and worked on to create the released version. The vocal is Mick's guide vocal, later peeled off and overdubbed with new vocal. Listen to Respectable on Place Pigalle - it's the take they used on the album but they edited it down and redid the vocals but the basic take is the band playing live - no musical overdubs

That Start Me Up is not an alternate take but is the LP version only with vocals he was still working on, since it has elements of the LP version vocals.

Plus it has backing vocals - there's no way those were on there like that in 1977 if they did 45 takes of it then.

This must be a rough mix for Mick to take home to do homework with, because there are some vocal bits that ARE on the LP version and if this was an alternate version it would have different elements in it musically - this is the LP version musically and somewhat vocally.
