To me the SONG was lost in the excess of sound.

"Well my heavy throbbers itchin' just to lay a solid rhythm down"

For me the best version was the one they laid down in the studio. Never surpassed. One of Bill Wyman's finest moments.

I really dig that version of IORR. It has a swagger reminiscent of the 75 versions.

Yeah, I liked the energy of 19th but the roll of IORR is better than the stones have done of late.

what Jagger did that night was surprise me. Amazing that he could pull that off so convincingly...I'd like to see others try and pull that off....on second thought probably not.

Next you're gonna want an Elton John/Kiki Dee follow up...let sleeping rock lie...

Noisy and overdone. I prefer the versions were playing in 1995 and '97.

I have no use for the wanna-be Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl should never be allowed out from behind a drum kit.

Fantastic! Iorr too, yeah the guitars are great but the sound isnt perfect. Jagger is great despite the occasional Vegasisms. Sometimes he sounds like he did in his prime.

Nice to see this again. Quite a lot have happened since...

Funnily, the energy level and straight-forward attitude in "Breakdown" reminds me of the version the Stones did in GOT LIVE IF YOU WANT IT!. You just add the modern sound and volume to 1966 Stones, and that's what you get..grinning smiley

But now reflecting the perormance 18 months later, there are traits in it I didn't recognize so clearly at the time. It is actually a funny experiment: you put a typical post-80's busy high-energy rock band - who has learned the rock style and genre from books and not being there in creating that - to back up Jagger and see what happens. There is a huge genarational difference there. And the band Jagger was making history in, wasn't a typical band not even at the time.

The instant reaction I get from Jagger's performance is that like buying a brandnew car, and suddenly realizing he cannot quite handle it; it drives too fast to his normal taste. Occasionally he sounds inspired, and like enjoying the new speed, but then - probably at the same time - he seems a bit insecure, even lost sometimes, and like hoping that he woud have the old car he is used to, have 100% in control, and knows each nuance of it. Even though he seems to let it go here and there, there is that "Vegasism" Redhotcarpet mentioned about - a kind of safe and sure routine he occasionally goes a bit autopilot-like, and not really being naturally affected and moved by the music.

But, yeah, a really fascinating performance for many reasons.

Yeah, that's one way to put it. But what is highly interesting is how much Mick seems to 'miss' that roll element. The band is way too busy and one-dimensional in its straight-forwardness to suit to his singing and performing routines. Actually I haven't thought that so much earlier that how deeply Jagger's performance altogether is based on the Stones sound. Probably that was the problem already present (to an extent) in his 80's solo doings (and not just the 'image' thing), but now that is really clear.

Good point, Doxa. Mick is not used to get "drowned" in sound like he is here.

I dont want the rolling stones turn into poor pretentious fake heavy metal imitators. When they are one of the greatest rock n roll bands ever with their bluesy style.

The original studio version is the best. IMO,of course.

I think Garage Rock at the time is indebted to the Stones song "19th Nervous Breakdown", so it makes a good choise for the Foo-Fighters and MJ to play this great track together, The Foo Fighters are "Rock" and well done MJ after all these years.
