The Beatles releasing new compilation of BBC performances November 11th

By Chris Welch on September 12, 2013 01:31 pm

Prepare for "new" music from the Fab Four. On November 11th, The Beatles will release a followup to their 1994 album Live at The BBC. On Air – Live at the BBC Volume 2 will include 63 tracks that hit the BBC airwaves between 1963 and 1964. None of the content here overlaps with the prior BBC compilation, according to a newly issued press release. Performances include 37 songs that are previously unreleased commercially, and fans will also hear 23 unreleased recordings of in-studio chatter between John, Paul, George, Ringo, and various radio hosts.

“There’s a lot of energy and spirit. We are going for it, not holding back at all, trying to put in the best performance of our lifetimes," said Paul McCartney of the compilation. The entire tracklist is now available at TheBeatles.com, and special pre-order bundles that toss in a t-shirt (or high quality lithograph) are also up for grabs. Of course, the new Beatles release will also be sold digitally via iTunes, marking the continuation of a partnership forged with Apple in 2009. For fans of physical media, On Air – Live at the BBC Volume 2 will be available in two-CD and vinyl packages. And lastly, the original Live at The BBC album has been given the same remastering treatment as the band's studio catalog and will be re-released alongside its follow-up on November 11th. Aside from straightforward remasters, The Beatles last released "new" music with the 2006 remix album Love, created for the Cirque du Soleil show of the same name.

Same release date as Sweet Summer Sun. Almost as if it were planned!

Sounds good, I'm in. I'm also in for one of the remastered Vol. 1's.

I've never been disappointed with any BBC release. Beatles, Zeppelin, Hendrix, Joy Division, Bowie, etc, etc.

Because they're releasing about 17 different versions of the Hyde Park show that they want us to buy on that day?

well perhaps they know that if the Rolling Stones were planning to allow the BBC to finally releae the vaults of the BBC stuff, this will make it less likely cos there will be the inevitable always after the moptops.
I think the real reason that the Stones don't release it now is that it is mainly early covers and even if it sold millions no money would come their way.

The Kinks too though. I love that version of The Village Green Preservation Society on there.

i was a little let down by The Who and Cream only because I know there was more than what they released. I like the Kinks too although now there is a big multi cd boxset of the Kinks BBC stuff. I have the 2 cd set that was released about a decade ago.

I'll be getting this, but there seems to be rather a lot of 'chatter' tracks. Isn't Lend Me Your Comb from Anthology 1? Also, I believe the tracks from the Baby It's You single are included, also. I don't own the latter, so that's a bonus.

This is great news and well overdue. I have a 14 album boot of all of the BBC stuff, and there is so much they haven't released that is in good condition. So this is very welcomed, and the re-master of the Vol 1 is great!

Almost. "Lend Me Your Comb" is from Anthology 1. And "I'll Follow The Sun" and "Boys" are there from the Baby It's You single. However, that single also included "Devil In Her Heart", which is replaced by an alternate recording on the new collection.

Who knows why? The "Baby It's You" version of "Devil..." has Harrison messing up the lyrics, so maybe that's why they are replacing it?

In my opinion, they should have left "Lend Me Your Comb" off, and let it be on Anthology 1. They should also have used the original version on "Devil In Her Heart".

But it is all minor flaws.

That Kinks BBC box looks amazing! I'd read about the release but haven't seen the full track list. The 1972 and 1973 performances from the DVD look like they're from the aborted concert film/documentary that was supposed to be released at the time but never was. I only have the 2-disc set from years ago, so I'll have to pick that up at some point.

Looks like there are loads more Beatles BBC tracks as well.

Why The Stones won't enhance their recorded legacy from that time, though frustrating, is probably not that much of a mystery--Mick just doesn't want ABKCO to profit any more than they do already. It's a shame, because it would be a real treat to have their BBC output properly remastered. If only the Stones and ABKCO could arrive at some sort of renegotiated compromise, so that the outrageously tyrannical terms originally set forth by Allen Klein didn't have to be so all encompassing, because, ultimately, it's the fans that are losing out.

By the way, the original version of the first Kinks BBC release was 3 CDs and went out under the title of The Songs We Sang For Auntie and covered 1964 to 1994:

CD 1: The Songs We Sang For Auntie

1. You Really Got Me
(recorded 7/9/64; Playhouse Theatre)
2. Got Love If You Want It
(recorded 1/10/64; Beat Room)

i looked it up. its a bootleg. the official kinks bbc sessions were first released in 2001 and that has a 2002 date on it plus it "don't pay for it. trade it freely" right on the back of the package in the picture

Yeah the Kinks BBC box set is outstanding, particularly for the DVD which has some great stuff on. One thing though, there is a lot of "announcer" talk at the intros of the songs. Which can be a bit annoying. There wasn't near as much of that on The Beatles sessions. As I said there is a great 14 album box set of The Beatles with a massive amount of material not released. There were rumors they were going to release it all...but it looks like they are going to dribble it out for a while. It is also amazing to remember that not only were The Beatles touring non-stop, recording singles and albums, but then performing a ton of stuff on BBC that was never released. This stuff dispels a lot of nonsense about them not being a good live band. They were smoking. What hurt them was the poor sound systems, small amps, and SCREAMING. They got sick of doing 20 minute shows for people not even listening. That would hurt any live band's performances.

The one thing I always find puzzling about the first BBC release was the presentation of A Hard Day's Night, which is not a completely live performance. If you listen to when the solo comes in at the middle (at 1:21), the live performance abruptly fades out and then the studio record is played, then the live performance comes back in, which is why they do that "Fade! Fade!" routine at the end and the BBC announcer saying they were doing that to show that they weren't in fact playing the record, when in fact they were, though only for those few seconds in the middle.

George was initially having a difficult session particularly with that solo, and in the end that part of the song has George Martin doubling Harrison's guitar part with a piano recorded at half speed then sped up to normal speed.

I've always wondered why The Beatles opted to not play that part of the song live for the BBC recording. Was the signature sound on the record so integral to the overall success of the song that they opted not to change it, or was it that George just wasn't "on" enough that day to attempt it?

BBC version with "studio version" in the middle

Original studio version

I would imagine that George wasn't 'on', as you phrase it. He could be quite the shaky guitarist in those early years. I don't think it entirely an reasonable assumption that the solo was a little too tricky for him in a live setting. Perhaps in the presence of a thousand screaming girls he can get away with it, but not on BBC Radio, maybe. His skills later improved immensely of course.

Geoff Emerick describes in his brilliant book "Here, There and Everywhere" the frequent problems they had with Harrison´s solos. Obviously it caused a lot of frustration for everybody involved.

They weren't exactly jazz-mucisians.......having problem with the solo in 'A hard days night....

Coltrane could have made that short solo to a half-an-hour solo and faster than a bullet from a gun and more varied than 100 womens....
