Phil Lynott seemed imo a man as the one you describe.
Try the magnificent live album "Live and Dangerous" first and discover the amazing guitar duo Scott Gorham/Brian Robertson. Lizzy at their very best.
"Jailbreak" from 1976 is normally considered as the best studio album they ever made - and I don't disagree. If you don't like "Jailbreak" or "Live and Dangerous", you'll never like Thin Lizzy. "Fighting", "Johnny the Fox" and "Bad Reputation" is also worth buying. In other words, try out the era 1975-1978.

I like them too, but I prefer Brian Robertson to Gary Moore.
For me the best Thin Lizzy line up ever was Phil Lynott, Brian Downey, Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson.
I would enjoy to read more about Thin Lizzy's shows .
Was the band more successful in Europe or in America ?
I am just wondering .
Whiskey In The Jar was a fairly big hit where I live. As far as I am aware, the best thing they did. A nice classic single with a remarkable guitar theme; from what I have read it's probably Eric Bell.

Today, on january 4, 1986, one of my heroes, whom I had the privilege to meet a few times, died. That is one day I´ll never forget.

Great post Vilhelm It's been Lizzy day in my household. Nothing but Thin Lizzy and Phil's solo stuff. Hugely talented singer-songwriter-frontman and bandleader.
I met Phil twice, in 1983 and 1984. Great bloke. Warm, generous, funny and very very smart. Greatly missed.

I like them too, but I prefer Brian Robertson to Gary Moore.

i remember years ago a friend of mine telling me "you have to see this new band,they're gonna be friggin huge.you better go with us or you'll be kicking yourself later"
sure enough,queen did turn out to be huge but the opening band thin lizzy were also just great.man, what a show.it was in a minor league hockey arena [about 3000 people] with general admission standing on the main floor and we ended up ten feeet from the stage.
we'll never see great bands like that coming down the pike again,one after another.i just cant figure out why.dont young people sing and play instruments anymore? what the hell? but i digress-r.i.p phil lynott

I believe the band was alot more successful in Europe than North America. I"m sure most rock fans in the States know the band only for Boys Are Back In Town (unfortunately).

Saw them at Reading festival in the mid 70's, i was in the empty arena working with a couple of people and they came on stage to do a sound check, they played The Boys are Back in town to me and an empty stadium, the sound just wafted around the empty field, Great experience.
