ULTRA - SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE FOLLOW UP SINGLE TO START ME UP

A bit late to quote you ULTRA, but I just saw that: Interesting thought.
May be it had become a second "Angie".
But then I would have lost this song as my secret Stones weapon to this day:

Girl: "Oh who is thaaaat? It´s sounds wonderful tender and ..mmmmh"

Me: "It´s The Rolling Stones."

Girl: "Ooh, the Stones! Never ever, ever heard it - I loooove it."

But first of all I have to say:

Heaven is one of my most important Stones-Songs.
It is encouraging me whenever I need a little cup of confidence.
So often when I was down it gave me the feeling things will turn out good.

Heaven & Co:

Once a guy from my company told me that he don´t know what music to put on when he has a girl in his apartment, which he is just dating her the first or 2nd time.
They are up there, she is in a mood, so what to play?
Soul like Marvin Gay & Co - very normal.
Easy listening Lounge jazz/pop/electro/house - well that´s running in the fashion stores all day.
I recommended the Stones.
"The Stones???", said, "they only got Angie."
"I can fill you a 90 min TDK-Tape (no CD´s yet in the mid 80ies) with slow, tender Stones", I replied.
And so I did.
The slow-Stones-Tape was a huge success.
After 2 weeks he came to me saying he can´t even express how thankfull he is.
His girl-life changed completely up there in his flat.
And he will give me something in return one day.

Which he did! 4 years later.
An Access-All-Areas-Pass (AAA) for the Stones at Berlin Weißensee on August 13th, 1990 1. gig of the band in East-Germany. (He knew the promoter of the concert.)

This is the tape:

"Heaven"
"Fool to Cry"
"Back Door Girl"
"Worried abou you"
"Till the next goodbye"
"Comming Down Again"
"Wild Horses"
"Memory Motel"
"Sweet Black Angel"
"Tops"
"Play with fire"
"Sister Morphine"
"Time waits for no one"
"Angie"
"Moonlight Mile"
"2000 Light Years from home"
"Lady Jane"
"As Tears Goes By"
"Almost hear you sigh"
"Beast of Burden"
"Salt of the earth" (fading out the uptempo ending)
"Indian Girl"
"No expectations"
"Love in Vain"
"Lovin Cup"

A killer.

...Where's "Streets Of Love"??

Don't like the song at all. Never could stand the falsetto voice of MJ. If it is sparsely embedded in the song like in Tops or in the refrain of "No Use in Crying", it is tolerable. But it isn't if it constitutes the song like in "Heaven" or "Emotional Rescue". Moreover "Heaven" is rather boring, a fantastic song for the Christmas party of a retirement home.

I like Heaven and all the Tattoo You ballads!

@caschimann: nice story! I recorded a similar TDK tape to my wife, when she was my girlfriend to introduce the Stones to her and to show her another side of them. It worked fine!

That's just a lame excuse imo. But I get your point...
Anyway: SOL is a babe magnet. Chicks just love it!!

Ah, ah, ah, ah, ...
Getting all wobbly here.

I've always thought that Heaven - No Use In Crying was probably their best back to back track selection.

LOL! Hey caschimann I think "Back door girl" might have scared her away but apparently not >grinning smiley<

Love "Heaven" and I agree about it following on into "No use in crying". There's not a weak spot on TY for me. Masterpiece. As is this wonderful track.

It's the power of suggestion!

The one there in the mix, which I love but doesn't seem to fit is Loving Cup.

I might have switched 2000 LYFH for She's a Rainbow, but yeah, nice mix.

I just discovered: I really wrote "Back Door Girl" on that tape.
Of course it´s "Back STREET Girl" - must've been a door in my head back then.

One of the most "Un-Stones" things they've done but it still sounds like them. There's this synthesizer sound in the background that reminds me of the song Friends on Zeppelin 3.

Someone on the old Stones Fan Club forum said he saw a TV ad/promotion for Tattoo You that played songs off the album, including Heaven, when the Stones were showed with a surreal sky behind them. That fan thought that moment was a clip from an entire Heaven video. I guess it wasn't. But I've since hoped beyond logic that that—probably nonexistent—Heaven video would finally surface.

Have I said how much I love this song? Well, I do. I have TY in my car CD tray and whenever I feel stressed, just need to mellow out..I always go for TY side two and if it's really bad, I play Heaven several times. It's got such a unique vibe, especially for a Stones song. I haven't smoked pot in decades, but if I did again, I think the first song I would reach for is Heaven. It's definitely got that spaced-out, just relaaaxxxx feel to it and sometimes that's just what we all need...a little piece of Heaven.

A very good and special track, a great riff and a great sound. Never been a fan of Mick's falsetto, but in this song it rocks!

I like Charlie's drumming, simple but effective. Then the other instruments just sit on top of that. Mick's voice just sounds so ethereal as it comes and goes.

A great chill-out song.

In another thread our DP noted that Bill claims to play the guitar on Heaven.

In fact he is credited on guitar on timeisonourside.

After repeated listens:

- still hear only one guitar
- me thinks that guitar is JAgger

Kimsley: "I played on Heaven, I played alleged piano on Heaven. That was laid down with just Charlie, Mick and I, I think. I don't think anyone else was in the room. But the session was called for like midnight and Mick and Charlie were the first to arrive and Mick started playing the chord sequence and I sat down at the piano and started following along and next thing I knew it sounded really good. So I told the assistant to roll it and we put some things on it and it sounded very good".

So my guess is that Kimsey is right and Bill overdubbed bass and synth.

Your turn.

C

p.s. Whoever is playing the guitar, Heaven is WAY better than Stop Breaking Down. I said it.

I agree, but I wonder what the third instrument Bill claim he played was...

Forgot about the bells/chimes, thanks.

Is there a real bass in there, or is it a synth?
