OT-ish Jimmy Savile dies aged 84
Posted by: Deltics ()
Date: October 29, 2011 17:24

Former DJ, TV presenter and charity fundraiser Sir Jimmy Savile has died, aged 84.

Savile, who was one of the most famous names on British TV and radio in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, died on Saturday.

His family programme, Jim'll Fix It, drew in huge audiences and the programme received 20,000 letters a week at the height of its popularity.

Savile started out as a DJ on BBC Radio 1 and was the first host of Top of the Pops in 1964.

He also appeared on the music show's final edition in 2006.

His TV persona included chunky gold jewellery, a huge cigar, his trademark snowy white hair and a number of catch-phrases which were frequently parodied by impressionists such as Mike Yarwood.

Born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, Savile was conscripted as a Bevin Boy, working in the coal mines during the war.

But he was one of the country's first DJs in the 1950s and began his broadcasting career at Radio Luxembourg before moving to the BBC.

Off screen he did a lot of charity work, running 200 marathons and raising £40m over the years.

Savile was knighted by the Queen in 1990 for his charity work

Ah, that's too bad. It seems everyone - good and bad - is going this year. I remember him well with programes such as Jim'll Fix It, etc. I suspect many non-UK residents here on this board will mainly recognise him from old Top of The Pops clips and the 1964 and 65 NME Poll Winners Concerts. R.I.P. Jimmy

I remember him on TV on Thank Your Lucky Stars, which was before Top Of The Pops and RSG etc. He had long hair for that time with blonde on one side and black on the other. It just seemed so far out and rebellious at that time. That was the days of fairly well suited and presentable D.J.'s.He was a one off and I remember in the early 80's visiting a friend who had a spinal injury at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. He was thought of with deep affection there for the charitable things he did for the hospital. The staff and patients who got to know him were full of admiration. He did a one day a week job at Leeds Infermary for many years, helping out as a porter. He was one of those characters you think will be around forever. R.I.P Sir Jimmy Saville O.B.E. sad smiley

Something a bit creepy about Jimmy but could never quite put my finger on it.

But RIP in any event.

My grandmother took me to see him open up a new shop in Upton. He got out of a flash Rolls Royce, cigar in mouth. Big smile. I remember him mostly on TOTPS. RIP Jimmy

I've always had that feeling but you have to take your hat off to him. His charity work was amazing.

RIP

There must be a few people who feel slightly ill at ease with their comments in this thread.

Well, you didn't need too much hindsight, It seems one or two contributors had concerns.

We had a couple of threads back 2 or 3 months ago devoted pretty much only to that as a matter of fact...I just don't know why someone would suddenly dredge up an old thread to try and embarrass people.

Is this another example of the moral code imposed by the one party state?
