Does anyone have the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab half speed vinyls from the 80's and also the new vinyl box sets and have had the chance to compare them soundwise?

Matt

Indeed. I've had this box for nearly 20 years and augmented it with Some Girls and Sticky Fingers, also by Mobile Fidelity. The only arguable downside is the individual albums are encased in generic red sleeves. You get a 12" square book that shows the actual covers but the book gets misshapen because they included the reflective cover applique from Satanic Majesties.

I can't believe the new vinyl sounds better especially as I'm guessing they're taken from the UNI CD masters, ala Exile.

I have some of their recent work (MFSL) and they are awesome!.

Having their Stones Vinyl collection would be Heaven for me!!!!

Do they have the 1971 onwards period as well?

Kind regards!

Hi R!

I believe you are indeed very pleased with the sound quality.

Do you consider it a big improvement compared with the standard issues?

I consider them to be the benchmark for all Stones remasters. They have the soul of the standard issues but sound much better. They don't sound "different" like the standard CDs.

I also have all of the SACD versions from 2002 and I prefer those for convenience but there is just something about playing the Rolling Stones on vinyl LPs that's... just... right.

For those not familiar with them: you also have supposed MFSL CD's from the 80s that can sound better than the regular issues. They are worth checking out if you don't know them.

Believe me, the new ABKCO box is the best vinyl reissues there has ever been of those early titles.

All the warmth, clearness and natural feel these vinyls have, is beyond the MFSL reissues, the 2002 remasters and the 2003 vinyl editions.

It's beyond me howthe did this, but I'm safe now. I don't need to look further after the perfect pressings anymore.

Hi Blueranger,

I have some doubts about the Universal re-issues sounding better than the Mobile Fidelity remasters.

The Universal were pressed after a Digital remastering work.

The Mobile Fidelity were remastered after the original analog masters.

There is no way of comparing both sources.

I own some LP´s from Mobile Fidelity and other Audiophile companies like "Speaker´s Corner" or "AudioTech".

All of them are, by far, the best sounding recording I own in my long record (LP´s and CD´s) collection.

Kind Regards,

SM

Are any of the albums in the MFSL box in Mono? Thx.

Yes. The debut, No. 2 and the two EP's are in mono.

I guess it's what you prefer. I think they have 'matched' the original warmth of the analog masters very good together with giving the sound an upgrade in both clarity, middle and bottom.

On the Steve Hoffman Audiophile forum, some audiophile's has trouble hearing if the new masters are created digitally. ABKCO has in somehow created a 'warmer' analog sound of the digital files. Don't know how. All I can say is that the box set is worth every a penny.

Just to clarify, I was asking if any of the albums in the MFSL box are in mono. I didn't think that the MFSL box included the EP's so I don't understand your answer.

Sorry. The MFSL box has the debut in mono. Then the MSFL box differs slightly from the new box, because 12X5 and not No. 2 are included. Also, the US version of Out Of Our Heads is used. All of 12X5 and OOOH are in mono on the MFSL box.
Besides that, several tracks on Hot Rocks is mono too.

6. Their Satanic Majesties Request
7. Beggars Banquet

My opinion,

is that if you can afford it, go for the Analog Remaster (Mobile Fidelity).

I don't have any of the boxes, I was just curious. I think that the analogue MSFL box sounds very good. I have the MFSL "Sticky Fingers" that is not included in the box, but sound fantastic. They sound has not been "cleaned" that what is distorted is still distorded because, as it says in the liner notes, it's a trademark of the group, But it has been cleaned in the way that every instrument comes through much better and the dynamics is super. Far from those remasters done today where there is hardly any dynamics at all. About the mono vs stereo in the MFSL box I know that it was there that Satisfaction, Get off of my cloud and Play with fire first appeared in stereo, and later also on the first CD's that used those remasters too.

Not quite. Satisfaction, Get Off Of My Cloud and Play With Fire appeared in Mono on the MFSL vinyl box set, but the cd issue of the title had the songs in Stereo.

Yes, but there are no Stones titles on MFSL label CD's, only Keith's Talk is Cheap. Any Stones titles on MFSL label CD's are counterfeits.

MFSL is given mastering credit on a number of early West German CD's on the London label. It is in fine print on the back of the CD. In general, these CD's sound very good.

Just received 1971-2005 from Amazon...sadly, I'll probably never open the box so I won't know how they sound.

Yes, I was referring to them. And if you take the inherent dynamics deficiency of vinyl into account, they may sound better than LP's, except for the limited frequency range.

Possibly not always.

"Mobile Fidelity, it should be noted, wasn't very happy about London's use of their tapes (as one label head went on record and bemoaned that London's use of the "Decca Digital" system had destroyed the faithfulness of the tapes used, despite ambiguity as to whether or not the system was actually used), so while the back of some of the London discs do credit MFSL, some do not. This is semi-random throughout the releases, and its absence does NOT mean you have an old-ABKCO version of a disc."

We are kindred I guess in that respect. I have a great deal of the catalogue in sealed condition, not as much of the 60's stuff of course.

The ONLY reason why I bought this overpriced box was that after Christmas, and only on amazon.ca, it dropped from $392, to $166, including shipping.

Too good a deal to pass up!
