Hearts For Sale
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

Air Studios, Montserrat, West Indies, March 29 - May 5, 1989 and
Olympic Sound Studios, London, UK, May 15 - June 29, 1989

Mick Jagger - lead vocals, backing vocals, electric guitar, harmonica
Keith Richards - electric guitar
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Ron Wood - electric guitar
Matt Clifford - keyboards
Bernard Fowler - backing vocals

My spirit is winging, my soul is free
I'm doing my drinking in good company
The music's screaming, my feet are flying
And everybody's laughing and nobody's crying
A sneak suspicion, it drags me down, a nagging feeling going around

Hearts for sale, going cheap, hearts for sale, lovers leap

My belly's full, my glass is brimming
The women look so beautiful and I feel like singing
The voice of conscience, the voice of reason
Is yacking in my plans, boy, I call that treason

Hearts for sale, they’re going cheap, hearts for sale, blood runs deep

I'm losing my willpower, my blood's running cold
My body's on pause, my mind's stuck on hold
What am I going to do about it?

A sneak suspicion, it drags me down, a nagging feeling going around

Hearts for sale, they’re going cheap, hearts for sale, blood runs deep
I don't need no doctor, I need a deputation
I’ll tell you, if you don't want my loving, you can just take my resignation

I'm under the hammer, I'm a full time worker, baby, I'm a real body slammer

Produced by Chris Kimsey & The Glimmer Twins

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Steel Wheels” LP
(CBS 465752-1) UK, August 28, 1989

>> The women look so beautiful that I feel like singing <<

the Mick's delivery of that line is charmingly hilarious
the ad-lib-sounding bit over the fade-out is great too

i love the Rolling Stones

Wasn't the song used for a commercial at the time? For a Philips CD-player or something?

I really like the "feel" of the song. Groovy as hell.

A good track, with a nice swing to it. Dig the echoey start to it and the harp at the end, that's a nice touch.

I'm not sure I like Mick's vocal style on this one though, it's a bit too reminiscent of his barking on Dirty Work.

Very nice track indeed. Nice bridge, in fact both bridges are good smiling smiley ("I'm losing my willpower..." & "A sneak suspicion..."). I miss a bit more juice in Ronnie's guitar sound here, though. Keith does some nice fills. Mick sings greatly.

has mick ever sung higher notes than in the bridges here? I think his range on this track might be artificially enhanced...

I hear you guys, I love the riff.
The sound is a bit too polished for my taste (but that's the case for most of SW anyway), but it's definitely a strong track.

to polished is a good description, seems like a knock off of Casino Boogie. And a very different tone for Keith's guitar. An ok number, but suffers under the weight of its production.

the bridge is great, but the rest is kind of paint by numbers imho.

It's a great track! The only clunker on Steel Wheels is Hold On To Your Hat - Wish I'd Never Met You should've been the fourth track.

You are kidding, right? Hold on to Your Hat was fan-freakin' tastic. Absolute shame it wasn't done live and, while I appreciate HFS as an exercise in sort of new territory, to my ears, it is VASTLY inferior to HOTYHat. Hat is an blazer that powers me up hills on my bike. It transforms me from a huking 245 lbs into a lithe Marco Pantani type with Phil Ligget screaming in my mind's ear!

I agree. There's always been something contrived or plastic-sounding to this song. One of my least favorites. All the pieces of a strong Stones song but lacking soul, hollow...IMHO

that riff is stolen from Dylan and from his Rolling thunder rev tour...he used it on Maggies Farm and wasn't it Mick Ronson handling the guitar....

One of my favourite tracks from Steel Wheels.
A nice mishmash of styles the boys have indulged in over the years.

The sound is maybe a bit "dry", but that's typical for many Steel Wheels tracks.

Great tune, suffers from the production but it doesn't matter.

A middling track on a middling album.

It was my favorite track of SW for a while. I love a chorus, sung by a bunch of guys like that; .. "hearts for sale.."
Again I say this about SW - the official version does not exist for me. The SW Sessions is the real Steel Wheels.

Boring as hell. Out of date filler.

I've always liked it
Is'nt MJ on the main gitar riff?
Great RW solo, very musically

I know a lot of people don't. I think it's fine. It's like most of the album, a solid B-plus, with a couple A level songs. Especially after the previous two stinkers.

The hollow intro already makes it. I always imagine the title as a neon sign above a roadhouse hostel
