Re: OT: Question about Stratocaster necks

I went ahead and got the Classic Player '50's Strat. The guitar shop I was dealing with promised to order an American Vintage '57 Strat too for stock, which I may wind up buying for myself when my birthday roles around in April.

Anyway, the Classic Player '50's Strat is quite nice. The neck is a bit wider than I had expected but still feels nice. The frets aren't too high. The pickups sound good. Overall I'm very happy with it except for the wiring issue. I didn't realise until Mathijs pointed it out that it comes with what Fender calls "Custom Wiring" and is accompanied with a drawing that explains just exactly what custom wiring is. My understanding is that the only difference is that there is no out of phase toggle position between the neck and middle pickup. That position is bridge and neck pickup instead. And unless I missed something, that's the only difference. I'll have to get it rewired eventually. But other than that, it plays smooth, it sounds good, and it looks good. So I'm quite happy with those aspects.

I never could post pics on here man. Never learned how or did whatever it was I needed to do in order to post them. It was my understand that not all members can post pics.

Anyway, I got the sunburst one. It only comes in sunbust and shoreline gold.

Anyone can post pictures. What you do is take them, upload them to a place like flickr or photobucket, and then they give you a link to post on here which makes the picture appear.

While it really isn't as involved as it may sound, I don't blame you if you don't feel like going through all that. It is a bit of a hassle, especially the first time.

I like the Shoreline Gold, although it doesn't really look gold in the pics I've seen. If anyone really needs to see a traditional sunburst (no offense, Tumblin, it's a beautiful guitar), this should be the same model:

I like the way the pick-ups and knobs are very creme colored, instead of plain white. That shows up more in this pic than in others I've seen. Is yours that way Tumblin?

Yeah it has the cream colored knobs and pickup covers. I quite like them. It also has a single ply pickguard, which makes no difference to me but others may prefer a thicker one.

I'm a sucker for maple neck Strats but I'm picky about the cosmetics. I don't like dark pickguards, pickup covers, or knobs and tend to like fairly conventional colors like sunburst, black, various shades of red like "candy apple"
"midnight wine", "candy cola", Torino red, etc...different shades of white and cream colors and some shades of blue. Particularly like Daphne Blue.

I ran across an American Standard Strat in a shop the other day. It was Candy Cola, which is close to Midnight Wine, or at least seems that way to me. It had a maple neck and was calling my name for $700. Seemed like a very good deal but I already have an American Standard Strat and besides that the purpose of my visit to the guitar store was to pickup my new Classic Player 50's Strat so I had to pass on the MIA Standard. I paid a lil over a grand for the one I bought last year, a black one with a maple fretboard. Seeing that one in the shop for $700 made me wish I'd waited.

BTW, I mentioned earlier in this thread that I was trying to make up my mind about whether to get the Classic Player 50's Strat or the American Vintage '57 Reissue. I decided on the Classic Player obviously but I still plan on buying the other one later on in the year. I'll update you all when I get it.

Does anybody have any expirience with the Fender Custom Shop's Time Machine series?
