DECCA's Mortlake facility
Posted by: 1963luca0 ()

I'm trying to verify if DECCA Records ever had, in the mid/late-70's - a facility
in Mortlake.
If this was proven, I'd need to know how circa many people worked there, at the time.
I'm offered a second copy of a RS album said-to-be special in-house 1977 Christmas limited edition for employes of DECCA facility in Mortlake.
I paid a very cheap price for my first copy, but this one's going to be very expensive and I'd like to gather more info 'bout it, before paying for a second copy.
It seems to be extremely rare: the very first copy was on Goldmine 15+ years ago, the second one is in my collection since 1998, the third appeared recently.
Thanks to all the insiders who'll care to help, Luca

Some hardly seen records tend to increase in value, when they become more famous than they were when you got them.
I think it applies to this one...
Even if you don't want to speculate on record value, they can became excellent for trades, in my experience.
Actually, what I've posted it is all I know about this Rolled Gold and I bought my
first copy as it was as cheap as circa £ 10,00 on eBay.

For those who care and/or are trying to verify to story behind the rarest Rolled Gold ever, DECCA Music Group LTD actually had a facility (near) Mortlake, in the late 70s and still does.
To be precise, the correct address is
347 Chiswick High Road, LONDON W4 4HS (Mortlake is 1.7 mile North).
I would like to count how many copies of this Christmas record exist: could the owners show up, please?
Bye, Luca

Easy....

How to publish a picture on the IORR forum pages
Right-click on the photo on a website.
Choose "copy image location" (netscape).
Or "Properties (Explorer) and copy the picture address.
Typically picture address:
[iorr.org]
Then use the following codes to tell it's a picture:

Example:

Remember no spaces (no blanks) between the markers, just the picture address. The picture need to be placed on internet, i.e. you should store your picture somewhere. IORR does not offer storage of picture, but you may link the pictures into your posts as shown here.

Hope this helps.... Please: tell me when it's going to be published your new book!!!

Thanks

In the early 70's I almost went for a job as a 'record listener' at Decca in New Malden which is not far from where I lived.Looked like an easy job ,but something with more dosh came up.A few years later when Rolled Gold came out,a mate of mine who was a 'record listener' at Decca got me a copy half price, and I still got it now. smoking smiley

The picture I should post is from my personal discography, not from the net.
If anybody here can do it, I'd send the file to hime privately and let him do the dirty work...
Any volunteer?
Thanks, Luca

Thanks, I've had a look at it. 1975 is wrong, and that's for sure.
1977 is the year the limited Rolled Gold was presented to employes of DECCA's London facility (near to Mortlake).
If you want to expand the subject, I can underline that one of the rarest Rolled Gold (second to the one above) is the export copy to Italy (two label variations reported). It was tha last BNritish export, before 'Steel Wheels' for Hungary, but that's another story...
Bye, Luca

What picture? Just to mention that the New Malden Decca factory and offices were only a few miles from Mortlake. Both were in SW London.New Malden closed in the late 70's or early 80's I think. winking smiley

Thanks to you, Ricardo.
As you can seen, the record/set is nothing special. It's extremely rare, nothing else, nothing more: 30 or 40 copies, in all.
The inner sleeve is the same of 'Get Stoned' 2LP set, issued in 1977.
In my very personal opinion, it's the rarest British album ever, but still it remains a poor effort,Just a Christmas present to a selected number of employes. Most probably, in 1977, the DECCA executives got much more.
We collectors are very lucky: the most of the dealers are not aware of the rarity of this item and some of us can get it for a bunch of Euros/Pounds, like I did. My suggestion is: write to all sellers on eBay and ask 'Is the inner sleeve in colour or B'n'W?'. That's the way I got it, after circa 15 years of restless hunting. The first time I heard about this album was in 1990, circa, by a premium seller on Goldmine. He told the complete story of the album and asked for US $ 700,00. Before e-mails were in, my letter arrived to late to get it, many years after I got it for € 10,00.
My question is: are we sure that its the Holy Grail in GB album hunting? What if the rarer unknown exist?
Bye, Luca
