First time I visited the US was in the end on the 80’s. I was In California to attend some serious NASCAR and Drag Racing, yea I’m a car nut as well. I drew up to a gas station with my rented Mustang, yak, I’m a Pentastar guy. I went to the counter and paid for 20 gallons and they noticed that I did not speak “their language”. They asked me from where I am and I told them "from Finland". The discussion continued like this:
woow, must be cold over there
Yea, it’s freezing cold for sure
How do you manage to live up there?
Well, it’s hard but we Finns are though guys you know
But where do you get your food from if everything is frozen then?
We’re hunters you know
Woow, do you have polar bears over there?
Yea, a lot of ‘em. As a matter of fact I just went polar bear hunting the other week. The meat taste so good
Wooow, awesome
By then the whole gas station was listening to our conversation

AND here we finally have the evidence. Polar Bears do exist in Finland as the videos has been posted on this thread smileys with beer

Bottniska viken (part of the Baltic Sea) has frozen which means that we will have inlandclimate here in the north of Sweden. That means that the temperatures will drop quite dramatically for quite a while. We have had temperatures between minus 20 and 30 degrees Celsius here for more than a week. Kiruna (far north of Sweden) had - 42.6 C a couple of days ago. The funny thing is that you get used to it and the advantage is that it doesn't snow in those temperatures.

Fox News found something else to report from Finland >grinning smiley<:

According to the O'Reilly Factor-show: "This is a country that eats reindeer. These are people that eat Rudolph and they're telling McDonald's what to do? McDonald's is the greatest food company in the history of the world, it feeds people more efficiently than any government."

Aren't we bad, huh? drinking smiley

It took some time to figure out whether it was appropriate to weather my thoughts about this misspelling! I didn't want to look like a wise guy!

Niagara Falls 100 years ago

In Laura Ingalls-Wilder's series of books "The Little House on the Prairie" she described living through this 1911 freeze in Nebraska.

It was one of her many fascinating stories telling a true historical background of an American family in "the good old days".

Her writings rival Mark Twain. Margaret writes:

Her mother had a cousin living in Niagara Falls that year. She told the family that she and her neighbors woke up in the night feeling something was wrong.

It took a while but they finally realized that it was the lack of noise. They had all become so used to the roar of the falls that the silence was unusual enough to alert their senses. Of course at that time nearly all the houses were near the falls.

Amazing pictures! Almost 100 years old. Can you imagine walking on Niagara Falls?
