Silver Train > All Down the Line

two songs written from the same mold (same chords, similar structure, slide guitar etc.)

both have a solid Keith riff/rhythm

personally i prefer Mick Taylors, Charlies, and Bill's efforts on Silver Train...the song just swings and chugs along picking up momentum along the way

I feel Siler Train is one of the Stones most underrated tunes...

It sort of fell through the cracks. Did they play it live?

Yes in 1973.....but I didn't find a decent version on YT

They dropped ST quickly from their shows because it sounded too much like ADTL.

It would have fit very well on side 1 of Exile...third song

I like 'em both, but All Down the Line is clearly the better track from the opening riff all the way through.

They're not THAT similar, imo.

I'm not so sure if it is Keith playing that rhythm guitar on ST either...

The studio version is a bit underwhelming. It sounds like it needed to air out on stage. But with All Down The Line, and Mick T's departure, it just fell out of the rotation.

The difference is that All Down The Line has one of the best
and dramatic bridges ever before the solo:

I need a shot of salvation, baby, once in a while
Hear the whistle blowing, hear it for a thousand miles

And it has the best bassdrumsound ever.

Besides women and matters of the heart I think they sing about trains more than anything else.

ADTL rocks a little more. I like them both, though.

While Silver Train is a nice tune there's no comparison, ADTL is the superior song.

johnny winter released silver train before the stones did, about 6 months before in the spring of 73

because of this i wonder if the song was written for him, or about him (he's albino) or what

either way the harp, piano and slide are all great

johnny does a great version of it on his 'still alive and well' record, out in 73

Bill doesn't play on Silver Train

All Down The Line wins out period - better mix. It carries way better. Silver Train is good but it's too flat.

no, it's not. it's the same song, so there's no "both" to like.

ADTL wins by Nicky Hopkins piano licks in this live version (I have removed guitars to make it clear)

the stones gave johnny an early version and he released it with his band. could have been this one:

HAHA! They didn't even mime the slide playing! They've been awful at miming to their own tunes!
