Black Crowes breaking out more Stones covers
Posted by: Hound Dog ()

A friend of mine saw the Crowes over the weekend in NYC and he said they played The Last Time and they've also been playing Just Want to See His Face. Has anyone heard these versions or know where you can hear them, would love to hear how they played them.

I saw them play "I Just Want To See His Face" last week at the show in Philadelphia. It was phenomenal. It must have been 12 minutes long with Rich Robinson singing lead instead of Chris. The backing singers were great replicating the sound from Exile. Download this. You won't be disappointed.

Yup and they recently played No Expectations. They are on a Stones roll! They do a good job covering the Stones, they aren't slavish to the original, but keep the feel of it with a lot of swagger.

those guys can play anything, always love to check out their covers. There must thousands of bands who cover the Stones, but how many of them also play Bob Marley, Stooges, Velvet Underground, Clash, and The Grateful Dead?

What do you think of Torn and Frayed?

Popped up in my ipod while I was out running the other day - the warpaint live version - and I was completely blown away. Completely forgotten what a great version that was. All very good until Dickinson's first solo. WHAT A SOLO!!! Gievs a kick to the whole band. I had to stop running and just listen. How could it be better? Just wait for the second solo, on the outro ... THAT made my day. Absolutely wonderful stuff!

Saw them in waterbury,ct and they played just want to see his face. rich sang lead thru a harmonica mic and it was a great version. I've heard torn and frayed in the past and they play the stones very well, I think Ryan Bingham should play cuts from Beggars Banquet, his band would be great, esp. if marc ford was with them.

great stuff.

They play the Stones songs much better than the Stones themselves these days.
And that hurts....

Doesn't hurt at all, at the contrary:
They need Jagger on vocals and we got the best Stones revival over the last 35 years.

Imho it's the opposite : these covers display the limit of the BC's talents. CR's thin voice is just not comparable to Jagger's. To me musically there's ONE undefinable thing missing, the thing that would make say "Holy sh!t! That's as good as the Stones themselves".

It just ain't as good... nice hat tips to the Stones's genius but nothing more than inoffensive covers. Maybe that's the difference between creating and duplicating.

That is just plain ridiculous. Limited talent? So to be able to release two phenomenal discs in a row (Warpaint and Before the Frost) and then nightly inject a variety of covers in your live set list from Dylan, The Beatles, Parsons, obscure folk numbers, Little Feat, The Stones, etc... displays a wide range of virtuosity and masterful understanding of music. And boy you are way off base to say Chris Robinson's voice is thin? Ok, you may not like them and you may not like the sound of his voice, but he is anything but thin vocally. The guy sings from the chest and uses his diaphragm to give a powerful vocal performance that is anything from thin! These guys are one of the hardest working American Rock groups out there at this point, keeping the thrill of live rock alive... then only thing thin is your argument.

i saw the black crowes live on 11/16/10. it had been a few years since i last saw them and chris robinson was loud as hell. it wasn't the case that his mic was turned up because he would go from super loud to a whisper within an instant so i doubt the sound guy was working chris's mic level every second of the show

YEah the other thing to remember about the Crowes, they are a working band. And kind to the fans. Non stop touring for the last five years. Releasing two great albums then a live DVD of each album...Yeah thanks man! Good to see them rocking and loving it.

Re: Black Crowes breaking out more Stones covers

just think since 2000 they have released:

3 albums (one is a double album)
4 live albums (2 were also released on dvd) counting the one with page
1 dvd (cabin fever)
1 greatest hits album
1 acoustic album (double album)
2 cd set of unreleased 90's sessions

thats not even counting the solo stuff:
chris robinson:
2 albums (1 came with a dvd)

rich robinson:
1 album

together:
brothers of a feather cd/dvd
