The Best Keith-Inspired Lead Guitarist Is...

Johnny Thunders. Bar none. Schooled in the same Blues and R&B guitarists that Keith learned from (with the added benefit that he could watch Keith), lived a similar lifestyle, and could fill a venue while half-asleep at the wheel.

I should also mention that he was in Gimme Shelter. Well, he's in the audience - visible in the Ya-Ya's deluxe edition book as well as the film.

Here is his tribute to Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley, Too Much Junkie Business, followed up with Pills. That's Jerry Nolan on drums, Barry Jones (London Cowboys, The Idols) on rhythm guitar, and Arthur Kane on bass.

And in younger days...

How does a lead guitarist get inspired by a rhythm guitarist.

Ummm...Keith HAS played plenty of leads in his day, which have inspired many players to copy his lead style.

If JT was just another run-of-the-mill guitarist, I'd call him a wannabe - but he wasn't. Nobody sounded like him before or after.

Yep, and wasn't Johnny more inspired of Keiths hairdo than his guitarplaying?

Johnnys guitarplaying became school for the whole entire punk-era...Viva Johnny Thunders!!!!

Keith is neither a rhythm or lead guitarist. He just plays guitar.

Well, he always talked about how Keith inspired him, and he also incorporated Stones numbers into his repetoire - perhaps surprisingly, during mid-show acoutic sets.

Here he is (with Cheetah Chrome) doing Dead Flowers and As Tears Go By at Stiv Bators' memorial gig:

Yep, and that is how he's always described himself. He plays guitar. Sure, he plays rhythm, but doesn't just bang out chords; he throws in licks and riffs, drops back to the chords, and when he does solo - at least in his prime, his leads are simple, bluesy and generally easy for other guitarists to learn - but nobody makes them sound like Keith. There's a beauty and artistry in simplicity that a lot of people just don't get. They're not impressed unless a solo is full of Eddie Van Halen styled showing off. I feel sorry for what such folks are missing out on by dismissing Keith Richards.

Whoever played the opening riff on Sheryl Crow's 'My Favorite Mistake'.

Total Keith/Stones influence.

also Crow's big hit "If It Makes You Happy" is played in open G. Lots of Keith-y guitars on Sheryl Crow's stuff.

I love this, Mick's walkabout is great and the band are sloppy-good in an Elvis/Johnny Cash groove.

BUT Mick really needed to be literally grabbed by the audience... "LET ME GO!!!!"

Maybe that was the intention but security were not going to let that happen.

johnny thunders definitely has that "keith cool" and that death vibe that
makes him even cooler. i think its impossible to seperate Keith's
recklessness from his music. you can't really be in your right mind and
do keith richards justice. you have to be right on the edge...

that said, it is a continuing source of amazement to me that one
particular guitarist NEVER comes up in these discussions...

Growing up, who were your guitar influences?

"I suppose Keith Richards, riffs-wise. A few others, like Neil Young. I'm a
mixture of certain bands and styles. Stephen Stills is another, and Ronnie
Wood for slide guitar. I was influenced by George Harrison from his solo
period, the All Things Must Pass album, the melodic soloing.

"John Martin – when I was younger, I supported him on tour, and I saw him
use his acoustic guitar with delay effects and things. There's others, too:
Stefan Grossman, Mississippi John Hurt, Robert Johnson and Big Bill
Broonzy. I got The Rolling Stones' first EP, and then I got into bands that
were influenced by the blues.

"I was guitar mad, you see. From the age of 14 till about 22, that's all I
would do - I devoured any guitar type of music, anything guitarish, it
could be Traffic or bands like Heads Hands & Feet."

How come you were never a Traveling Wilbury? Seems like you know or knew
everybody involved.

"I was kind of the host/virtual member. They recorded it all in my house. I
put Dylan together with Tom Petty – he said he always missed having a band
that was like a band, and I said the only band to be in was the
Heartbreakers. George Harrison was living in my house in Encino at the
time. Everybody met up there.

"I was busy doing quite a few things in England. That Wilburys thing
happened really quickly. It all took place around my kitchen table and in
my garden. I introduced everybody, went off, and when I came back they had
already done it."

i'm serious. i've been begging all the very smart guitar heads on IORR to
evaluate Stewart for almost a year now and have gotten back exactly nada.

please, somebody show mercy, and listen to mick-and-dave do their version
of keith-and-ronnie on this track and tell me you're not impressed...

(guitar solo/duo starts at about 3:05)

Very hard to beat David Grissom - he's been on many tracks - all of which have the right off-hand vibe

listen to Joe Ely's Lord Of The Highway - that band was a Texas Stones - killer rhythm/lead riffing throughout -

You guys are right. Jeff Trott is the man. He plays alot of Keith style guitar and is great to listen to live. I once played a show with them at the Greek theater in Berekely CA and saw him work up close. He was getting amazing tones from his Fender Twin and Vox amps, definately had the Keith thing going at times. Way better than Johhy Thunders ever was imho. peace

I think Keith Richards inspired other artists more with his lifestyle and appearance than with his guitar playing....I do not know of any guitar-freak person inspired by Keith, rather Clapton ...

I respectfully disagree. True, many players have tried to cop his image and lifestyle, but loads of guitarists have also been influenced to try to play guitar like him even though he's not a Clapton, etc. His stuff is simple but just sounds so damn cool! I know that hearing his playing on Ya Yas at age ten is what made me want to play guitar, and my desire was much more to sound like Keith than Mick Taylor or any other technical virtuoso.
