There does seem to be a dividing line in sound and feel with the pre SG albums and those after. Not necessarily bad, but just different. Pre SG seems less polished with a looser feel and maybe musically deeper. The exception might be Tatoo you - some of the tunes such as tops, slave and Heaven have a similar feel and we all know those were leftovers from pre SG.

Heaven is from one of the 1979 sessions for EMOTIONAL RESCUE, just like Neighbours and No Use In Crying are.

Heaven was recorded in late 1980 and early 1981. Worried About You a leftover from 1975 also finished in 1980/81. No Use in Crying the only one worked on in 1979.

I think McPherson has it wrong on TIOOS.com about Neighbours. I know I have read several places that it wasn't recorded in 1980.

Heaven is supposedly the only new song on TY.

The Declaration of Independence was revised approximately 20 times. most of these folks were in in their 20s and early 30s. Ben was in his 70s. This accomplishment is amaazing.

7 pages on HOF...yep great song on a great album. Maybe because for me it was only my 3rd Stones studio album but at 18 years old was eagerly awaited.

"The Stockholm Circus version from 2003 might be the closest attempt of a good latter-day version".

Sometimes Life is so beautiful, Hand Of Fate is by far my favourite Stones song and I was lucky to be there first row one step from stage when they did it at the Cirkus.

I agree, the only great version post-1977, it is really a pity that they choose the Olympia for the Four Flix DVD, should've had the Krone or Cirkus show instead.

Back to the song, it's got this desperate, "Gimme Sheltery" Doom and Gloom which is so precious which only The Stones and Dylan can reach on numerous occasions.

I love Charlie's hi-hat outro on the album, it is so freakin' funky! And the songs does not fade which is also a Winner!

The only weird thing with this tune is that my uncle prefers Crazy Mama which is also great but two tiers below the glorius Hand OF Fate.

It's an odd song. It's intense yet so sluggish and almost lazy. But they don't have a lot of songs like this. I've always liked it. It always sounds on the verge of falling apart, much like Tumbling Dice is, and so in that aspect, it's a nice groove. Is it a CYHMK or Rocks Off type song? No. But it is what it is - a nice dirty filthy lazy howling rocker.

I agree with skipstone's angle on this one.
It rolls with that elusive, elastic beat.

[Has one of Keith's best & truly classic Open G progessions too.]

Um, no. Hand of Fate is Ok but it’s cartoonish compared to Gimme Shelter – it’s not the least bit menacing. I would’ve preferred Keith to sing this one – he’d bring more sincerity to it. Mick is more believable in Freejack than he is in this song. Come to think of it though, it’s not all Mick’s fault - the guitarists just plod through it hitting mostly sterile notes. Early Stones auto-pilot (and it's not substantially better or worse than 'Crazy Mama').

That's a bit unfair I think .

It's no Gimme Shelter... but it's a good old Stones rocker with that unique swagger that no other band comes close to.

If this song were truly good, why was/is 'Some Girls' treated like the 'Second Coming?'

Cartoonish?? I'd rather have Hand Of Fate than Gimme Shelter in a desert island joint playing non stop anyday pal, another man's coffee etc I guess.. 2 middle 8's are better than none...

Besides, I can relate to the lyrics much better. I've never been near a war but I sure have entertained a married woman in a one-horse town on more occasions than one....

Love it. It is a filler but from the days when they has to consider bad reviews and harsh criticism.

I tell you what, that Wayne Perkins. I thought it was Mick Taylor.
Go ahead, laugh. I nearly died. (wrong tune)
Really tho. Nice.
Luv Jagger's growl.

The sound of it makes it more than filler, imo.

But it isn't really a great song. I love it just the same. Groovy stuff!

Funny, after the snare intro by Charlie in Commit A Crime I expected Love Is Strong smiling bouncing smiley

On a few songs you can clearly hear Darryl. I kinda hoped he would be more audible on all of these fantastic blues songs. Because I like the blues with a distinct bass.

It is among Stones's top 10 for me. The perfection of lousiness. And a great solo.

I just don't like the way Jagger's voice sounds on this. It sounds like there's something caught in his throat.

Wayne Perkins is an incredible guitarist. Listen to his solo on Bob Marley's Concrete Jungle. Just chilling... There's a reason why he almost joined the Stones

HOF is my all time favorite. In all the times I've seen the band live they didn't play it. I was lucky enough to see them up close at the Palais Royale show. One of the biggest laughs I got was the 4 flicks dvd shows Mick b4 the show in discussing the set list saying "no Hand of Fate". It's such a great song about pure desperation. I'm surprised it never made any soundtracks on TV or movies.

always one of my favorites - i think i love the multiple guitar solos the most ... not overdone and they fit perfectly with the track! But of course, Micks vox are killer!

This could be the most perfect vocal he ever did in the studio IMHO.

What do you call that vocal delivery...a 'smooth growl' maybe?

Could be ... for most perfect (he has so many) I would probably go w/ Gimme Shelter, but Hand of Fate is 'killer'!
