Yes,staeofshock,the link works.
<<He said he had little difficulty ...he had to convert from being the star musician to being a background instrumentalist <<

Was Preston such a "star musician " in 1976 ?
At least in France, I recall having heard him many time on the radio but he wasn't that famous .

I am a Frenchie ,as Mick affectionately called them in the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977 .

Very good pick. A lot of allure.

First article I see especially focused on B.Preston mini-show in 1975

Seems jounalist was waiting at the bar till B. Preston showed up for his personal mini-show

The RS consisted at that time in a group of five people, not four, by the way. Man was a fortune teller of sort. Or maybe quite high.

Very interesting: a magazine for Blacks only. In the ads only black/brown people. And then this sentence: "... he was accepted by both audiences, white and Black ...".

Btw: Didn't Preston already tour with the Stones in 1973? No word about that. And indeed: four Rolling Stones plus guitarist Ron Wood. In 1975 Wood wasn't a RS band member yet, remember? It took some years.

Maybe he was bigger in America in 1976. He was on The Midnight Special TV show and Soul Trian, and had a couple big hit records and he was in The Concert for Bangladesh. Most people knew of his playing piano on 'Get Back' for the Beatles and that he was a child prodigy. He won a Grammy, and had three chart topping records. He was a musical act on the first Saturday Night Live in 1975. He wrote 'You Are So Beautiful' for Joe Cocker in 1974. I would say he was a well known Star Musician, at least here, in 1976.

Only know his name from "With You I'm Born Again" which was a big hit in the late 70s. Later I discovered he worked with the Beatles and Stones.

billy was very big in the US during that era. big radio hits and his stints with the stones AND beatles (no other musician could boast both alliances) vaulted his status, as well.

Interesting, if only for the ads...I saw Billy with the stones at Les Abbatoires(Paris), it was all very good but in no way did he steal the show...the crowd found it all mildly amusing. For me the whole bumping and grinding thing with Jagger was tiresome and slightly cringing. Still, it was a top show and my first so it remains in my memory as the best.

I remember Billy Preston, with that big afro, being popular in the 70s...
"Nothin from Nothin" and "Will it Go Round in Circles" are huge songs from my childhood. When I first got into the Stones in about 79, i was surprised to see Billy's name in the album credits....SO I knew who Billy Preston was before I knew anything about the Stones.

I agreee Stupidguy2. I remember those songs well and remember seeing Billy on some TV show. His outfit and smile stick with me to this day.

Very race oriented article. A sign of the times I guess. There was a lot of racial stuff going down in the 70s. Sort of embarrassing writing though....the writer seemed to be looking for racial issues. I think the phrase "acid rocking" pointed to the Stones crazy rock and roll style, not Acid as in LSD but acid as in freaky.

"the handclapping was uncharacteristically in unison"

Pretty hilarious. I assume it was meant to be tongue-in-cheek, but it's hard to tell...

An interesting article from a black magazine from the 70's.
obviousely, 35 years later, everything sounds a little "old".
I find there are a lot of more interesting things in the magazine (under an historical point of view) rather than Preston's interview.
