I'm a few years behind the technology curve. I still only collect music that's on wax cylinders. I find they have greater "warmth" than what you hear on those "sterile" 78s.

I got some shellac, too, and play them with a grammophone.
If I lift the Thorens turntable it has got: Made in Switzerland,
3. August 1939. A month before WW II.

I'm with you there dude.
78s were ok, but then they started mastering them with 45s in mind, boosting all the levels and compressing the hell out of them.

Sadly, a lot of wax cylinders need baking these days. Once they stopped using the ear wax from whales and started using the synthetic stuff, the quailty went down hill and the cylinders become unplayable after aprox 15 years.

"Pride of my collection? An unplayed Heartbreak Hotel or Mystery Train on Sun label....

?

'Heartbreak Hotel' was Elvis' first release (of new material) on RCA, mate. Wasn't on Sun, surely.

There were five Sun singles :

Thats All Right/Blue Moon of Kentucky
Good Rockin' Tonight/I Don't Care If The Sun don't Shine
Milkcow Blues Boogie/You're a Heartbreaker
Baby Lets Play House/I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone
I Forgot To Remmeber To Forget/Mystery Train

How on earth did you get them? Auction or e-bay? By 'unplayed', I presume you mean its unplayed since YOU bought it?

I'm jealous!

I have a couple of Elvis 78's that my mum bought in 1957 (One of 'em is 'Jailhouse Rock') which, when I left home to get married in '87, I insisted she bequeath to me as a parting gesture due to their historical and cultural significance."

Sorry, sloppy typing. I have Heartbreak Hotel on an unplayed 78rpm on HMV that I bought at a booty!

The Sun 78 is Mystery Train and my absolute pride and joy. I bought if from an old truck drive nearby to me.

I play all the 78's on a 1956 Regentone Radiogram in Mono.... just how they were meant to be played!!

I have been told that early Stones on 78 were produced in India but I Am still looking. Some presses were sold to India when microgroove took over in Western countries. Have not been able to contact anyone there. Would love to get some or even just one. What a bonus.

Found one from the Beatles!

The Beach Boys contribution to this year's Record Store Day is Good Vibrations b/w Heros and Villains on a vinyl 78 rpm double single.

It seems that we're moving back in time. I think on Record Store Day in 2012 we're going to get some reissues on wax cylinders.

The cartoonist R. Crumb (who hates rock and roll even though he did the Cheap Thrills cover for Janis) has a collection of blues 78s that must be worth a fortune.

Even in India, it appears they only pressed Beatles 78s from 1963-1965. I think this was the last one.
