JEALOUS! Will you have the ability to post pictures, stories, etc? A trip like that is on my bucket list but I'm not nearly as close to pulling it off as you.

I was inspired by a Morgan Freeman doccumentary called "Last of the Mississippi Jukes". I can't recall details as I haven't watched it in a while but you may want to check it out if you haven't seen it already. An Amazon search pulled up some other titles that sounded interesting but I can't vouch for.

The only other thing I'm wanting to add to my trip will be a detour from the delta into the hill country of northern Mississippi. A different leg/tradition of the blues but, after learning a bit from the North Mississippi Allstars, I want to find out a bit more. Would love to find Jr. Kimbraugh's place as well as Zebra Ranch where Jim Dickinson raised Luther & Cody.

Your's is a trip I'll look forward to hearing about.

Peace,
Mr DJA

thanks for the tip...a film that's gotten some good reviews that i'll watch before the trip: M for Mississippi...basically a film about taking just such a roadtrip. there's also a new delta blues film that will premiere at the clarksdale fest in april that i hope to catch there.

will also check out new orleans on the trip...can't believe i've never been there...as i'm a jazz maniac....but, then this is a blues trip, so....

great idea. the Southern Whispers restaurant in Greenville was a stop on the old Chitlin Circuit, and is still open apparently. Looks like there are a few blues clubs, casinos, etc there as well. oh yeah and a river.

Great that you are including New Orleans. Once you hit Bourbon Street you may not want to leave.

Bourbon Street is the kind of place where you want to get your picture taken just to prove you were there.
It's really mostly a tourist trap, full of cheesy bars with high-priced drinks and t-shirt shops.

Visit the bars off Bourbon Street (better prices & real local people) and the galleries & shops as well.

I did it the other way - Memphis to New Orleans. It was great. Stopped at both of Robert Johnson's gravesites.

haha - yeah, that would make sense from a follow-the-migration standpoint. that'll be another trip with the wife. funny, though - my original honeymoon idea with her almost 30 years ago was to "do the southside blues club scene"...that was back when muddy and some of the other greats were still with us. the wife didn't approve that plan...but now she's all excited about this blues trip...just took 3 decades of pounding the blooze into her soul for it to "take."

be careful when you're in memphis stonestod.don't try to get cute and experience some of the "local culture" and wander off out of the tourist area because you will get robbed and f/cking killed.
i'm telling you straight up. i know that place and its dangerous.spend a little extra money and stay at the hyatt across from the stadium, you'll be on beale street as soon as you walk out the door.

make sure to hit every one of those little bars along beale, the history in there is really something.and dont forget to go see graceland, even if you're not a fan its pretty amazing to see.

well, every city can be dangerous.if you are in orange county or hollywood your experience in los angeles will be a bit different than say if you visit compton.

think visiting a movie studio vs oh i dont know, being shot in the leg.

its the inner city that usually gets sketchy.the problem is beale street[ where you want to be] is in the heart of the city.dont listen to me,research EVERY FACET of your trip before you go.

Many American cities can be dangerous if you venture into the wrong neighborhood.

Best to use common sense and travel in groups, especially at night.
If you find yourself in a neighborhood that just doesn't look right, turn around and go back.
Get advice from your hotel about which areas to avoid.

avoid traveling in groups, and don't listen to advices given by hotels, unless you want a real boring trip (in that case buy the dvd and stay at home)

Re: Danger in Memphis...

Certain sections of town ARE dangerous to certain people... A few years ago, a now ex-girlfriend who had relocated there for business get lost on the way home from work one night. She stopped to ask for directions and in addition to being given accurate directions back to the interstate, was told not to stop anywhere else for a few blocks as "it was not safe for her to be in that part of the city".

So easy to think that shouldn't/doesn't exist in civilized world in the 21st century. So sad when you find out it still does.

Peace,
Mr DJA

Skip Bourbon Street: head uptown (via a street car) to the mid-town area (i.e., Maple Leaf...)

Hey Tod - hope Austin is treating you well. Indian Summer is alive and well here in the Bay Area

I'd go online and do some research to find some famous funky BBQ joints along the route. This trip sounds like a great idea. Have fun!
