Good Times
(Sam Cooke)

RCA Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, US, May 11 - 12, 1965

Mick Jagger - lead vocals
Keith Richards - acoustic guitar, electric guitar, harmony vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Brian Jones - electric guitar
Ian Stewart - marimbas

All night long, I want to tell you, all night long

C'mon let the good times roll
We're gonna stay here to soothe our souls
It could take all night long

The evening sun is sinking low
The clock on the wall says it’s time to go
I've got my plans, I don't know about you
I tell you exactly what I'm gonna do

Get in the groove and let the good times roll
We're gonna stay here to soothe our souls
It could take all night long

It might be one o'clock, it might be three
Time don't mean that much to me
Ain't felt this good since I don't know when
I might not feel this good again

So c'mon and let the good times roll
We're gonna stay here to soothe our souls
It could take all night long

All night, all night, all night, all night long
Somebody said it might take all night long
All night, all night

C'mon and let the good times roll
We're gonna stay here to soothe our souls
It could take all night long

Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Out Of Our Heads” LP
(London PS 429) US, July 30, 1965

One of my favourite Stones track.

It's a near-exact copy (including the marimbas) of the lovely Sam Cooke original. That was only a year old at the time, but hadn't been released in the UK as a single.

But once again the Stones have taken a cover and made it their own: in their version the marimbas are further back in the mix and Charlie's drums and the guitars are up front and dancing - good times indeed. Love it.

not a song really suited to mick's vocals, and he sounds tentative, but it's a refreshing track, confirming their interest in soul music in this phase.

what year was it ? my last one was june 95 and the grateful dead opened with touch of grey during the first set and the second set opener was help on the way, slipknot and franklin's tower .killer opener for the second set .after drums and space we got watchtower, black peter, around and around(bobby sure could sing this one) i fought the law and the law one (i know that i dont have the right title to this one but it was pretty funny that ole captain trips choose this one to sing because at the previous nights show a mini riot broke out on the streets between trouble makers and the cops a mounted patrol officer was pelted with beer bottles one of them hit him in the head knocked him off his steed and then his police helmet was stolen from him as he lay on the ground (the helmet was never recovered) and the true deadheads then started picking up the broken pieces of glass on the street (shi% like that you cant makeup)

I wonder if Dave Hassinger recommended the Stones do this song since he also engineered Sam's version at RCA the year before.
I recall there was a version of this song posted here that had female background vocals.

Yawn. Not one of their best covers, IMO. Then again, I'm not a Sam Cooke fan.

An alternate version of this song was to have been included in the ABKCO album "Necrophilia". It features a similar arrangement, with prominent female backing vocals, and is in STEREO. This version has been floating around for years, should be easy to get and is in quite good (but not excellent) fidelity.

I always liked the "zoom bass" on this one.
