Respectable question
Posted by: rainhog ()
Date: November 21, 2010 19:16

Hello Stoners, just finished watching the Respectable video. Always thought it was lip synced but after watching it again I think that it isn't. Was wondering if there is audio of this video on a disc somewhere or am I in fact wrong and it is synced. Can someone educate me on this song as it is my favorite STones song. Thanks in advance.

I havent watched that in awhile but it seems to my memory it may have been live vocals over pre-recorded music? I'm thinking "Far Away Eyes" was like that too.Maybe someone else remembers clearer than me. Meanwhile, I think I'll go dig it out and take another look!!

ANOTHER QUESTION:

In the video Mick sings a different lyric at one point. Instead of singing "We're talking heroin with the President" he sings something else ("We're SOMETHING ELSE with the President" ) but I can't understand what. WHAT IS HE SINGING INSTEAD?! Thanks.

I don't think it's synched. The way he says "All right, Keith" before the solo is not synched.

I agree Title 5. I think Mick is singing over a basic rythem track or something.

i stand corrected - i forgot this was live vox as well--the stones were amazing - so few bands did this - angie, silver, iorr, dancing, next goodbye, aint too proud --all live vox - a testament to jagger - so many bands phoned it in back then

No problem
After listening, here is my synopsis:
Lead Vocal is live
Harmony Vocals are taped
Backing Track is taped but not the final released edit.
Bill Wyman IS present no matter what is photo shopped by Starbucks
and....damn fine solo by Keith

Damn, they sound good. I like that take better than the album cut. They certainly made it look 'real', even it was pre-recorded music backing. Even Charlie bothered to match his drum movements to the track. And, I think I heard 'Heroin' at the beginning? No?

Never get bored of watching this. Great vid.

No doubt Aerosmith pinched the smashing through the wall bit for the Walk this Way video.

Well to be fair there are other vids with different versions (I think Bad Co did a few) but Respectable is a great song with a great video. A video which actually benefitted from being a bit cheap and cheerful.

As for drummers there is a great clip (must be on YouTube) of Slade miming Merry Christmas. Noddy gamely mines away while Don gets carried away (possibly while drunk) and really starts hitting the drums. Jim Lea just about stops himself laughing.

It is a totally Fender guitar song that Keith ruins in later years noodling with the Gibson.

Did anyone ever figure out what Mick sings instead of "We're talking heroin with the President?" Title5Take1 brought this up ages ago and it's something I've always wanted to know as well.

Sounds to me like he says...."We had a man to man with the president".............drawling his man & man...........mairn to man.......??

Or; maybe...."we had banter (bairnter) man with the president"

Banter = English slang, jokey verbal exchange

is mick referring to anything nonfictional with the heroin/president line? What president are we to think of?

I am wondering if this isn't a cynical nod to Elvis visiting Nixon in the White Houes to talk about drugs...and being made an honorary Marshal...

Bianca was hanging out with President Gerald Ford's son Jack.

"Talking herion with the president" & "Easist lay on the White House lawn" both reference this.

Thanks, Eddie. I think the "man to man" line sounds right. Appreciate it.

It's great how most of the song sounds like synching although the tone at the end of a couple of lines is clearly different than on the album. So if not synched then it was indeed a nice job by Mick.

That's O.K.... that's the best I could discern, re. the context, I think either could fit but I think man to man sounds most right to me as well.

Especially Charlie does a good job synching his drumming to the tape. Compare with some stuff, like at the Sullivan show in 69, when Taylor's and Keith's guitar playing is completely off the map...
