I think people are assuming that the instruments were "correctly" tuned in the first place, something that may not have been the case back in the early days. So songs that are inbetween keys may actually still be running at the correct pitch (speed).

Was it Strawberry Fields? One of those 1967 Beatles tracks they used one take and in the mixing to master session had to slowly speed up the first take they were mixing to catch up to the speed of the second take they were using for the edit.
Of course, had they just relaxed and worked on one take...
