Rolling Stones' HOLD BACK:

"If you look in your history book, if you delve in the past,
Stalin and Roosevelt, yeah, they both took their chances.
And George grasped the nettle, it's do or dare
From the banks of the Delaware."

(Incidentally, what's with the Stalin reference? Stalin murdered 20 million of his own people. and enslaved millions in the Gulag system.)

Ha ha! I always shook my head at that line. "Hey, Uncle Joe, you took an awful chance starving and killing all those 10-15 million."

One of the worst songs ever written...certainly by the stones.

We Didnt Start The Fire by Billy Joel mentions

US presidents - Eisenhower, Truman, Nixon (twice), Kennedy (twice), Reagan

Other US politicians - Joseph McCarthy, Rockefeller (probably refers to the family as opposed to the former vice-President)

Non US heads of state and Premiers - Stalin, Nasser, Juan Peron, Malenkov, Princess Grace, Khruschev, Chou En-lai, Charles de Gaulle, Castro, Pope Paul VI, Ho Chi Minh, Menachem Begin, 'Ayatollahs In Iran', 'England's Got A new Queen'

'Mythical' Kings & Tenuous Links - 'The King and I', Elvis Presley (!), Davy Crockett (well, he WAS 'King of the wild frontier', wasnt he?)

I think Billy wins!

Maybe that's why he doesn't write songs anymore. He put everything except the kitchen sink into that one!

Billy is a winner, saw him in Chicago early 80s. He recently revealed his chronic depression following 9/11 (he is from Long Island, just outside New York City) which plunged him into alcoholism. Perhaps why he's not creating new gems. But he played & sounded great last Nov. with all the players at the Hurricane Sandy benefit at MSG! smoking smiley

Living Color, Cult of Personality - Kennedy.

I think Kennedy actually wins this if we're keeping score.

They Might Be Giants had a B-side called "James K. Polk" (11th President 1845-1849). They don't just mention him, the song is like a short, weird history lesson. Though a history lesson written by somebody clearly unimpressed with Polk.

Get Started - Graham Parker

The Mona Lisa's sister doesn't smile
She tried to pose but only for a while
Leonardo sent her home Since then she has lived alone
With her few belongings and a copy Of a painting of herself unhappy
She is going to burn it when she's ready

Chorus:
Get started, start a fire

Marilyn was lying all alone With an empty bottle by the phone
Kennedy was not around She was cold when she was found
But she'd gone where goddesses are sleeping
Where the molten tongues of flame are leaping
Or where the angel's hearts are heating

Joan of Arc was burning at the stake Somebody had made a big mistake
She had lit a cigarette In an aiport where you get
Your fingers taken off for smoking.
Meanwhile up the road a factory's choking
The ones who killed her work there I'm not joking

John Fogerty - Long Dark Night

George is in the jungle
Knockin' on the door
Come to get your children
Wants to have a war

...

Runnin' down the highway
Shoutin' to the Lord
George's got religion
And you know he can't afford no more

Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate

Pontius Pilate, Governor of the Roman Province of Judaea (specifically, "Roman Prefect", a high officer of the State with judicial and executive powers) from 26 to 36 AD (Anno Domini)

Southside Johnny & The Jukes had a song in the 80's called "Hard To Find". Second Verse Lyrics:

Johnnie F. and Jackie looked like they had it all
Start at the top, you never think you'll fall
So much in love, always together
Till they ran into bad Texas weather now
Trouble down, down down down in Dallas
Shots rang out in the middle of the afternoon
Now we know all about a certain Miss Monroe
And Jackie K. turned into Jackie O.

The Fools (GREAT Boston Party Band) had a song called "Sex"
Lines include:
Josephine tore Napolean's Bone Apart
They also make referances to Helen of Troy and Cleopatra

In "Summertime Blues" the lyrics reference taking "my problem to the United Nations" and calling "My Congressman".

Peace,
Mr DJA

Bushleaguer- Pearl Jam

How does he do it? How do they do it? Uncanny and immutable.
This is such a happening tailpipe of a party.
Like sugar, the guests are so refined, (look like melting mice)

A confidence man, but why so beleaguered?
He's not a leader, he's a Texas leaguer
Swinging for the fence, got lucky with a strike
Drilling for fear, makes the job simple
Born on third, thinks he got a triple

Blackout weaves it's way through the cities
Blackout weaves it's way through the cities
Blackout weaves it's way,...

I remember when you sang
That song about today
Now it's tomorrow and
Everything has changed

A think tank of aloof multiplication
A nicotine wish and a columbus decanter
Retrenchment and hoggishness
The aristocrat choir sings
"What's the ruckus?"
The haves have not a clue
The immenseness of suffering
And the odd negotiation, a rarity
With onionskin plausibility of life,
And a keyboard reaffirmation

Blackout weaves it's way through the cities
Blackout weaves it's way through the cities
Blackout weaves it's way,...

I remember when you sang
That song about today
Now it's tomorrow and
Everything has changed

"Mexico" by Jefferson Airplane:

But Mexico is under the thumb
Of a man we call Richard
And he's come to call himself king
But he's a small-headed man
And he doesn't know a thing
About how to deal for you

"Campaigner" by Neil Young: "Even Richard Nixon has got soul"

"Ronnie Talk To Russia" by Prince.

"Dear Mrs. Roosevelt" by Woody Guthrie. Actually there's probably lots more in Guthrie's lyrics but that one sprang to mind because I'm fond of the Dylan version.

Didn't Billy Bragg have a few directed at the PM and such? For better or worse, little ole me probably has the record for Reagan uses: 9 between 1984-1991, and 3 of those also had Bush Sr. in them. Two of the 9 were songs, the other 7 actually used their voices. I made lo-fi psychedelic sound collages with a lap steel slide guitar and effects, backed with a variety of sound sources I taped like helicopters, forests, traffic, monks, ads, propaganda flicks like Reefer Madness ...and lots of Reagan speeches, lol.

Morrissey had "The Queen is Dead" with the Smiths and "Margaret on the Guillotine" for Ms. Thatcher:

The kind people
Have a wonderful dream
Margaret on the guillotine
Cause people like you
Make me feel so tired
When will you die ?
When will you die ?

And people like you
Make me feel so old inside
Please die.

How about Dead Presidents by the great J Geils Band, an ode to US currency:

A little bit of Lincoln can't park the car
Washington he can't go too far
Jefferson is good, to play at the track
You think you're gonna bring them big fish back

Them dead presidents
Them dead presidents
Now I ain't broke but I'm badly bent
Everybody loves them dead presidents

Hamilton on a ten baby gonna get you straight
But Jackson on a twenty is really great
And if you're talkin' 'bout a poor man's friend
Grant will get you out of whatever you're in

Them dead presidents
Them dead presidents
Now I ain't broke but I'm badly bent
Everybody loves them dead presidents

A hundred dollar Franklin man, is really sweet
A five hundred McKinley is the one for me
If I get a Cleveland I'm really set
A thousand dollar Cleveland is hard to get

Them dead presidents
Them dead presidents
Now I ain't broke but I'm badly bent
Everybody loves them dead presidents

30 years ago now in Germany: Rock musician Udo Lindenberg sang 'Sonderzug nach Pankow'. The ironically song was directly addressed to the former President of the State Council of the German Democratic Republic, Erich Honecker. [en.wikipedia.org]
